1. HWPOA BOARD MEETING – VIDEO CONFERENCE
On Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30 PM, the HWPOA Board of Directors will hold its monthly meeting. The meeting will be a video-conference held online via Zoom. Please click here to see the agenda.

2. RELAXED PARKING DURING THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS
The Council Office has notified us that parking will be relaxed in our community during the upcoming Jewish holidays. For a complete list of dates and locations where the parking rules will be relaxed, please click here:

Please note that portions of Strathmore and Westholme near Hillel will not have relaxed parking, per Hillel’s conditional use permit.

5. DMV NEWS – NO MORE WRITTEN TESTS FOR 70+ DRIVERS
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced earlier this week that drivers 70-years-old and older in California whose licenses expire in 2024 and beyond will no longer be required to take a written knowledge test beginning October 1.
For those renewing their license who are 70 and older, an office visit is still required for a vision exam and an updated photo. Some renewal notices for customers with licenses that expire in 2024 may indicate a knowledge test is required, but it will be waived during the in-office visit.

6. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENT – SATURDAY
LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath is hosting “Get Ready, Stay Ready!” Emergency Preparedness Event on October 5th at the Skirball Center. This is a fantastic opportunity for you and your family to learn vital information about emergency preparedness and ensure you’re ready for any situation.
Event Details:
- Date: Saturday, October 5th from 9am – 1pm
- Location: Skirball Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd.
What to Expect:
- Free Onsite Parking for all attendees.
- Complimentary Breakfast to start your day.
- Resources and Information from key agencies including LA County Emergency Management, LA City Emergency Management Department, and the California State Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara’s office.

7. DISTRICT ATTORNEY CANDIDATE DEBATE
KNX radio and the LA Times are presenting a one-hour live commercial-free debate on Tuesday, October 8 at 5 pm between the two District Attorney candidates, the incumbent George Gascon and the challenger Nathan Hochman.
The debate will be aired on KNX news (97.1 FM and 1070 AM) as well as on the digital and social platforms of the LA Times and KNX.

8. UNDERSTANDING LOCAL BALLOT MEASURES

- Proposition 36 — Increasing Penalties for Theft and Drug Trafficking

CicLAvia—Heart of LA
Sunday, October 13 from 9am – 4pm
on various streets in Downtown LA
Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Downtown, Echo Park, and Little Tokyo all contain rich history, a strong community spirit, and delicious food. This CicLAvia Sunday offers a chance to check out some of the MANY local gems in the area outside of a car.
Heart of LA, our beloved anchor route, will connect Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Downtown, Echo Park, and Little Tokyo. There will be tons to see and do along the route so make sure to check out our blog! Be sure to also use the CicLAvia Interactive Digital Map to plan out your day!
Free Concert – Piano Performance
Saturday, October 19 at 3:00 PM
at Westwood Library
Mark your calendars! We look forward to welcoming pianist GRACE CHEN, completing her degree in piano performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. She’ll present some of the masters of the Romantic Era, including Schumann’s Grand Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 11, along with pieces by Chopin and Debussy.
UCLA Botanical Garden’s Fall Fest
Saturday, October 19 from 12-4pm
at the UCLA Botanical Garden
Join us for our upcoming Fall Fest here at the Garden! We will have fun activities for people of all ages such as the Los Angeles Public Library’s iNaturalist workshop, learning about the plants used in basket weaving, and making seed bombs, along with live performances by ilayali, Melt to Stone (who performed at our Twilight events in August and September), Bryce Fleming, and Garden Party. There will also be the food trucks Rice Balls of Fire and Ciao Bella on site.
Organizations like California Native Plant Society, Theodore Payne Foundation, Bruin Birding Club, and more will be tabling at this event and having fun giveaways.
This event is free and open to the public!
