1.  LAPD REPORT – CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

The LAPD and the Brentwood Community Council shared a number of safety tips to keep your home safe from burglars.  While no measure is absolutely fool-proof, the more we all do to make it harder to commit a crime in our neighborhood, the sooner criminals will leave.

Harden Your Home:

  • Install an alarm and USE it.  Alarm all windows: burglars will even make ladders out of lawn furniture to gain entry upstairs.  Include motion sensors and glass breakers.
  • Keep your house looking lived in, whether you are home or not.  Lights on, noise from a TV, stereo or radio.  Consider putting lights on timers.
  • Safe or Safes – use it, and have it bolted down.  If a safe is not installed properly, it is not effective. Consult a professional.  Consider multiple safes, potentially one acting as a dummy safe. While a convenient location, burglars are going straight to the master bedroom. Consider installing a safe in a child’s room instead.
  • Windows/Glass doors – consider having safety film installed – this makes glass harder to break.

2.  NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

National Preparedness Month is a national campaign that occurs every September. It aims to educate and empower Americans to respond to natural disasters or potential terrorist attacks.  With the 4.7 earthquake in Malibu earlier this week, it is a good reminder to prepare for potential disasters.

Below you will find links to several documents that could be helpful with emergency preparedness.

3.  DOG OWNER ETIQUETTE

HWPOA has recently received several complaints regarding dogs and dog owners:

Pick Up After Your Dog
Please clean up after your dog – always!  Remember that it is illegal, as well as unsanitary, unsightly and un-neighborly to leave your animal’s feces on the sidewalk or neighbors’ lawns.

Use Your Own Trash Bins
While everyone appreciates that you are picking up dog waste, please dispose of it in your own trash bin.  Please be respectful and do not use your neighbors’ bins.

Keep Dogs on a Leash
For the safety of your neighbors, children and other dogs, please keep your dog on a leash at all times when you are outside of your home.  We have had several past reports of dog attacks in the neighborhood, injuring both people and dogs.  Please follow the law and keep your dog on a leash.

Please be sure to remind everyone in your household that walks your dog about these rules – including your children, housekeepers, dog walkers, etc.  Thank you for your cooperation.

4.  SEEKING HOST FOR YOUNG FAMILIES MEET-UP

HWPOA is looking for one or more residents to spearhead a Halloween Meet-up for young families in the neighborhood.  We already have several volunteers but we still need a family who is willing to offer their home or yard to host a small neighborhood event.

With young students in many different schools, it might be a good way to meet neighbors.  The meet-up could be on a weekend afternoon, possibly with costumes, snacks and activities.

If you are interested in hosting or volunteering, please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.  Thanks!
