1.  DAYLIGHT SAVINGS REMINDER

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, March 12. Daylight savings begins this Sunday, March 13! It’s time to “spring forward” – set your clocks forward one hour!

Daylight Saving Time is also a great time to check the things that keep us safe and ready for emergencies. It is a good time to:

  • Replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Double check the expiration dates on your emergency kits and replace missing/expired items.

3.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

More trees for Holmby Westwood
Tree Planting on May 7 at 9 am

The Holmby Westwood Green Team is planting more parkway trees!  On Saturday, May 7  we again will  partner with TreePeople to plant trees on Manning Avenue as well as Malcolm and Dalehurst.  Please join us between 9 am and noon to cheer the volunteers on, meet more neighbors and have some fun.

Working with consulting arborist, Lisa Smith, the Holmby Westwood Green Team identified the best replacement tree for Manning Avenue between Malcolm Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.  The majority of American elm trees that were originally planted on this street succumbed to Dutch elm disease. The Brisbane box was selected as the street’s replacement tree because it is visually compatible with existing trees on the street, is drought resistant, requires low maintenance, causes minimal root damage, does well in poor air quality and grows fast. It is approved by the City for Manning’s 6 feet parkways.

Homeowners on two blocks of Manning between Malcolm and Lindbrook have given us permission to plant 20 new trees.  In addition, Malcolm Avenue will add 3 more Coast Live Oaks and Dalehurst will add 7 more Canary Island Pines.

This will be our fourth Green team tree planting and will bring the total number of new parkway trees that we have planted in the Holmby Westwood neighborhood to 76 !

The Green Team welcomes more Holmby Westwood neighbors to help us “green” the neighborhood.  In addition to working with the arborist species by species and street by street to select replacement trees for streets where they are needed, we are educating residents about the beauty and value of our tree canopy and ways to protect and preserve our trees.  Look for our tree articles in the HWPOA newsletter.
