1.  LA COUNTY MASK MANDATE

With the Omicron surge continuing its decline, Public Health officials caution that “post-surge” does not indicate an end to the pandemic, but rather that COVID-19 metrics are stabilizing across the county.

Public Health will consider LA County to be “post-surge” when COVID daily hospitalizations drop below 2,500 for seven consecutive days.

Once LA County enters post surge, masking will no longer be required in outdoor spaces at outdoor Mega Events or in outdoor spaces at childcare facilities and K-12 schools.

The masking requirement at indoor establishments will continue until:

  • LA County has two consecutive weeks at or below Moderate Transmission (10-49.99 new cases/100,000 persons in the past seven days), as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention OR
  • Vaccines have been available for children under age five for eight weeks; AND
  • No emerging reports of significantly circulating new variants of concern that threaten vaccine effectiveness.

Per state regulations, indoor masking at K-12 schools, childcare facilities, youth settings, healthcare settings, correctional facilities, homeless and emergency shelters, and cooling centers is still required. Additionally, per federal regulations, masking when riding public transit and in transportation is still required.

Employers must also continue to provide high quality and well-fitting masks to workers who are in close contact with others until transmission is lower. Vaccination verification will also continue at mega events and indoor sections of bars, lounges, nightclubs, wineries, breweries, and distilleries.

2.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

TREE OF THE MONTH – CANARY ISLAND PINE

The Canary Island Pine is the Green Team’s Tree of the Month for February.  Look for this tree species on Dalehurst Avenue.  The profile information is primarily drawn from the STS Publication “Street Trees Recommended for Southern California” and the Selectree Cal Poly website.

Special thanks to Cassandra Franklin, Kathryn Welch Howe, Cage Hall, and Allyson Bunting for writing and designing the Tree of the Month Profiles.

3.  ADOPT FIRE STATION #71 – ADDITIONS & CORRECTIONS

A few corrections to last week’s post:

Comstock Hills HOA came into existence in 2007 and thus, joined the Adopt Fire Station #71 eight years later.  The Adopt program began in 1999.  Len McCroskey was a founding member.  Brian Studwell and Russ Alben were the catalyst who formed the group, wrote the bylaws, and received IRS approval.  Please note:  the donations are tax deductible.  It’s important to get the facts straight and give credit where credit is due!

If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to “Adopt Fire Station #71” and mail to:

4.  METRO BUS/RAIL SERVICE CHANGES

Like many organizations across the country, Metro has been facing staff shortages since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Due to these staff shortages, Metro is making temporary service adjustments on Sunday, February 20, to most bus and all rail lines in order to provide our riders with more reliable and predictable service. Service levels will be slightly adjusted to significantly reduce missed service, and create shorter wait times and more room on each bus for our customers.

Check for updates on your bus or train schedule by using the My Bus tool.

5.  FAMOUS & PROMINENT RESIDENTS OF HOLMBY WESTWOOD

Many thanks to Susan Reuben, Vice President of Holmby Westwood POA, who created a file of the many famous and prominent residents since Holmby Westwood’s history began in the late 1920’s.

We thought it would be interesting to include a few each week in our newsletter and look forward to your comments and/or any additional history you might share with our readers.  You might be surprised to find a VIP lived in your home or a famous architect who designed it.  Here we go…

NOTE:  Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart lived at 232 Mapleton, possibly, at different times and now, the home is behind gates.

Oleg Cassini – 10431 Wyton

Marlene Dietrich – 868 Birchwood

Jeanne Crain – 354 Hilgard

6.  GET FREE N95 MASKS

Americans can now get up to three free N95 masks at select pharmacies and community health centers, courtesy of the Biden administration.

400 million free N95 masks from the federal government are being distributed at thousands of pharmacies and health centers across the country that participate in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.

The HHS says there will be a limit of three free N95 masks per person through the program. Details on how often people will be able to receive the free masks are not yet available.

A complete list of pharmacies participating in the federal program can be found on the CDC’s website.

7.  CINCINNATI BENGALS AT UCLA LUSKIN CENTER

Despite UCLA’s ties to the Rams, it’s actually the AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals who will be calling Westwood home heading into Super Bowl LVI.

The Bengals’ players and staff are staying at the Luskin Conference Center – often heralded by Bill Walton as the greatest hotel in the world – smack dab in the middle of campus, and they are using the Wasserman Football Center for their practice location.

9.  RESIDENT ADS

SEEKING PART-TIME NANNY

A very nice couple is looking for a part-time nanny (full day, 2 to 3 days a week) for three boys ages 16 months (he walks and talks), 4 years, and 7 years old. The older boys are in school from 8:00 to 3:00, so for them, help would be needed in the mornings and picking them up from school. Applicants would need to be vaccinated and “boostered,” be covid-conscious (the husband is a doctor), and have reliable transportation. Please respond to Dafna at 310-650-7982.
