2.  HOLIDAY PACKAGE SAFETY

What comes after Black Friday and Cyber Monday? “Package Theft Wednesday”, the biggest day of the year for package thieves.  With the holiday season there are more packages and thieves who want to take advantage of the ripe pickings.

It is never safe to leave packages by your front door. Please have packages delivered with “signature required” or have them delivered to another location (such as a business office) where it can be handed to a person directly.  We also suggest following these simple tips…

DO

  • Check your email alerts to know when packages have arrived and have someone bring them into the house as soon as possible.
  • If no one is around to receive packages, have them delivered to a safer location, like a workplace or a Smart Locker.
  • Check delivery dates to make sure packages don’t arrive when you’re away. If this can’t be avoided, have a friend or neighbor hold them for you.

DON’T

  • Leave packages out all day or overnight.
  • Leave outgoing mail in your mailbox, especially any bills with checks.
  • Thieves are getting more creative and some will arrive at your door with a food delivery bag, leaving with your belongings when they see no one is home. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

3.  DROUGHT CONDITIONS – PLEASE CONSERVE WATER

From LADWP:

It is more important than ever to stay vigilant with our water conservation efforts as we navigate the current dry weather conditions. Take simple steps to reduce your use. We offer a variety of rebates, programs and free water conservation items to help make conservation even easier for our customers. Together, we can do more to protect our precious water resources and the environment.

Ways you can conserve water:

  • Limit outdoor watering
  • Use recycled water when possible outdoors
  • Take shorter showers
  • Only run dishwashers and washing machines when they are full

4.  MOVIE PREMIERE – STREET CLOSURES

UAR/MGM will be holding the Premier of “LICORICE PIZZA”, at 7:00 PM on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Avenue.

There will be various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue.

5.  FIXING L.A.’s SIDEWALK PROGRAM

L.A. Controller Ron Galperin released a new report analyzing the City’s sidewalk repair program and urging sweeping changes to get more walkways fixed. Controller Galperin found that less than 1% of the City’s sidewalks have been certified as repaired. Why so few? When it fixes a sidewalk, the City replaces the entire parcel — far more than it is legally required to do — making repairs more costly and time consuming than they should be. In addition, the current priority is to fix sidewalks next to City-owned facilities, leaving out L.A.’s residential neighborhoods and commercial centers. Controller Galperin also determined that the City is responding slowly to simple repair requests.

Los Angeles lacked a comprehensive sidewalk repair program for nearly 50 years. That changed following the 2016 Willits settlement, when the City agreed to spend $1.37 billion over 30 years to address broken sidewalks, inaccessible curb ramps and other barriers in the pedestrian public right-of-way. That year, the City Council also adopted a “fix and release” policy, allowing L.A. to repair broken sidewalks and then issue a certificate of compliance, along with a limited warranty to the adjacent property owner for the repair. After that, the City can enforce the owner’s duty to maintain the sidewalk on their private property.

Along with the report, Controller Galperin created an interactive dashboard that maps 50,000+ sidewalk repair requests over the past six years. Users can view the requests by Council District or Neighborhood Council.

6.  WESTWOOD RESTAURANT UPDATE

From Carole, past president of Westwood Hills POA:

Happy to report that the Westwood Village restaurant scene is getting brighter.  On Glendon, both Fellow and Violet Bistro are now open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.  AND Down the block at the Hammer Museum, Alice Waters’ eagerly awaited LuLu is now open  Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Each of these restaurants is unique and each is great in its own way. We have tried them all and are so happy to see this revival of quality in our Westwood Village food scene.  Looking forward to seeing familiar faces on our next trips.

NOW OPEN: LULU
Lulu, the Hammer’s new restaurant led by acclaimed chef, writer, and cookbook author David Tanis and conceived with legendary chef and food activist Alice Waters is now open for lunch, with menus changing daily.
