1. HALLOWEEN SAFETY
In order to assist the Los Angeles community in enjoying this fun-filled holiday as safely as possible, Los Angeles County has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips for children and their parents:
Tips for a Spooky & COVID-Safe Halloween
In addition to COVID safety, please read and take heed of these important general safety tips for Halloween:
- Drivers should look for children walking on the street, running and darting in between parked vehicles;
- Especially when in or near neighborhoods, avoid using cell phones and texting while driving;
- Keep houses and driveways well lighted so children know they can approach your homes;
- When inspecting candy, if in doubt, just throw it out;
- Be sure to follow all traffic signals and laws and walk only on sidewalks, not the street; and
- Adults should always accompany children, trick-or-treat in groups or have children be accompanied by a trusted adult.
PET SAFETY
Don’t forget about the four-legged members of the family on Halloween. Pets can be confused and spooked by strange sounds and sights, and unfamiliar people in costumes, so keep pets indoors and away from the front door. As always, make sure your pets also have up-to-date identification.

The homeowner reported to HWPOA that the suspects broke into the house while they were not home. They set off the alarm and took items from the home. The homeowners contacted both the LAPD and their security company.

3. DRIVERS LICENSE RENEWALS FOR AGES 70+
Californians age 70 and older may continue to renew their driver’s licenses online or by mail through December 31, 2022. Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed legislation to extend this temporary rule.
The ability for senior drivers to renew at dmv.ca.gov/online – including for REAL ID renewals and even if their renewal notice states a field office visit is required – is another example of how Californians can take care of most DMV tasks without an office visit.
Customers applying for a REAL ID for the first time may start the application online and upload the required documents. They must visit a field office to take a photo and finalize the process.
4. LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY – SURVEY
The Los Angeles Public Library is conducting a survey to better understand how the library meets patron needs, and how Angelenos feel about the library as a welcoming and safe place.

5. EARTHQUAKE BRACE & BOLT PROGRAM
Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) is a grant program that provides eligible California homeowners up to $3,000 toward a residential seismic retrofit. The purpose is to help homeowners lessen the potential for damage to their houses during an earthquake by “bracing” the crawl space, when necessary, and “bolting” the foundation to the house’s frame. EBB has helped thousands of California homeowners complete retrofits!

UCLA’s Biggest Science Fair (Via Zoom)
Sunday, November 7, 2021
12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Join us for the 13th year of this free, family-friendly afternoon of science exploration! Take part in 28 real, hands-on science experiments and guided demos for all ages about everything from archaeology to bees to kitchen chemistry to black holes. Follow along in your own home while interacting with UCLA scientists!
- “Ask a scientist” Q&A sessions will give you the chance to talk with experts in fields including astronomy, chemistry, geology, and epidemiology.
- Live talks will cover food science, Earth’s magnetic field, the science of plastics, and much more.
