1.  L.A. COUNTY – WHAT’S OPEN

LA County’s Department of Public Health has prepared a helpful list of what’s open (or not) in LA County.  Click link below:

2.  HOUSING & ZONING BILLS

There are nine bad housing bills that were recently approved in the State Legislature. When the legislature reconvenes, they will be heard in either the senate or the assembly, depending on where they have already been heard. These bills include SB 1120, SB 902, SB 1085, SB 995, AB 725, AB 1279, AB 2345, AB 3040 and AB 3107. Each bill will destroy single-family zoning. You should search each bill through the California Legislative Information website. Holmby Westwood took a position to oppose SB 1120. Here is what you can do to preserve our neighborhood:

  1. Contact your legislators’ local office directly. Calls are good. Constituents hold a lot of sway with legislators!  Find you legislators here.
  2. Write a letter/email opposing and submit them to the State Portal HERE. The portal sends your letter to important “bill analysis” and to the committee that will hear the bill. Why is the Portal so important? It’s the only way to ensure your issues are cited in the committee’s important binder.
  3. The Portal is very important but it’s a pain. Go to the instructions here and print them out.
  4. For your Portal letters, find the right Committee address HERE and print them out.

3.  HAZARDOUS & ELECTRONIC WASTE DISPOSAL

LA Sanitation (LASAN) has established programs for Los Angeles City residents to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste (E-waste).

Our S.A.F.E. Centers reopened last weekend for LA City residents to drop off their household hazardous waste.  Due to Covid-19, there are strict safety rules that must be adhered to, and long wait times are anticipated.

  1. Remain in your vehicle at all times.
  2. Face coverings are mandatory at all times.
  3. Materials must be in your unlocked trunk or tailgate.

4.  DMV EXTENSION FOR SENIOR DRIVERS

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is providing an automatic one-year extension to Californians age 70 and older with a noncommercial driver license with an expiration date between March 1 and December 31, 2020. This action delays the requirement for this population to visit a DMV office during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Licenses for drivers 70 and older that expire March through December 2020 now valid until 2021.  For more information, please click here.

5.  LE CONTE NAME CHANGE

Several weeks ago, the North Westwood Neighborhood Council (not the Westwood Neighborhood Council where our homeowners are represented) voted to remove the street name “Le Conte” in the village and to include 44 homes on Le Conte in Holmby Westwood.  The council’s president, Michael Skiles and a councilmember announced that a letter was sent to Councilman Koretz to introduce a motion to change the name.  Lacking thorough research, they falsely accused Joseph Nisbet “Little Joe” Le Conte as being a vicious racist, Confederate soldier and hateful slave owner, and virulent White Supremacist.  Turns out, they had the wrong Le Conte.  Word spread quickly throughout the neighborhood before additional research was done by others.  Joseph LeConte, a white supremacist and slave owner, was the father of Joseph Nisbet “Little Joe” Le Conte, for whom the street was named.  “Little Joe” Le Conte was a professor at UC Berkeley and beloved by student Herbert B. Foster, the engineer who helped lay out plans and named the street.  Our HWPOA Board member, Kathryn Welch Howe brought it to the attention of our board at our meeting this week.

It is interesting to note that in addition to LeConte, Hilgard and Gayley Avenues were also named after professors at UC Berkeley by the same student, Herbert B. Foster.

6.  WESTWOOD RESTAURANTS – DELIVERY & TAKE-OUT

Earlier this week, all restaurants were ordered to shut down indoor dining operations.  However, you can continue to support local Westwood Village restaurants by ordering takeout and delivery, or by enjoying your meal while seated outdoors.

7.  U.S. CENSUS 2020 – BE COUNTED

Even during this unprecedented crisis, the 2020 Census is in full swing. For any Angeleno who missed the opportunity to fill out the census, it’s not too late to do so online. At this time, L.A.’s response rate is still under 50 percent, meaning only half of the City’s population has completed the questionnaire.

“Census data determines funding for programs that are vital to our City and all of its communities,” said L.A. City Controller Ron Galperin. “If we don’t have an accurate account of how many people live in Los Angeles, we can’t get the funding and representation we deserve. It is important for everyone to be counted, so please encourage your family and friends to fill out the census today.”

8.  SUMMER FUN AT LA COUNTY PARKS

In case you haven’t heard, July is “Parks Make Life Better” Month in LA County. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this has never been so true!

That is why LA County Parks, in preparation for this Summer, helped convene 90 park municipalities in partnership with the Department of Public Health (DPH) to develop COVID-19 health procedures that will keep LA County staff and park guests safe.

The following is a list of some of the recreational activities and amenities that LA County Parks is offering to promote physical activity and wellness this Summer:

  • Splash Pads
  • Swim Beaches
  • Overnight Family Fishing and Camping events
  • Summer Day Camps
  • PAD In Motion – a new twist on Parks After Dark
  • Trails and Natural Areas remain open for active recreation

To see a complete list and details, visit the 2020 Summer Fun website at parks.lacounty.gov/summer. Read LA County Parks’ full announcement, here.

9.  THANKS TO 3 CAR GARAGE

Last weekend on Malcolm Ave., neighbors enjoyed a live driveway show by local classic rock band, 3 Car Garage.  We received many enthusiastic responses from neighbors and look forward to another great show.  We will let you know when they plan another neighborhood performance.
