1.  VALET ORDINANCE AMENDED

Big thanks to City Councilmember Paul Koretz, Jeffrey Ebenstein and Jasmine Shamolain for successfully implementing an amendment to the valet ordinance to help our community!

If you live in the north/east portion of our neighborhood, you’re all too familiar with valet companies using Holmby Westwood as a parking lot for parties in Bel Air and Holmby Hills.  This started happening a few years ago when LAFD determined that many of the streets in Bel Air are too narrow to allow valet parking.  So, rather than paying to park at UCLA or other nearby available lots, the valet companies decided to use our neighborhood as their parking lot.  In fact, last year’s Super Bowl had a Bel Air party offload approximately 400 cars in Holmby Westwood!  Guests, catering trucks, staff, the works.  They set up a half dozen shuttle stops – it was like Disneyland!

There are many instances where Holmby Westwood homeowners who were hosting events found that their guests had to park blocks away from their own homes because our neighborhood streets were inundated with these other vehicles.  Hard to imagine the problem if you don’t live on one of the streets closest to Beverly Glen and Sunset, but it’s been a nightmare for those who do.  To make matters worse, it was entirely unpredictable as there was never any advance notice.

With the new ordinance, valet companies (not homeowners) will be required to apply for a one day permit IF and only if the party host chooses to use a valet company. THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE IF YOU USE A VALET COMPANY.  If not, there are no new restrictions on anything.  If you wish to use a valet company, every company in Los Angeles has been notified and are required to handle the permit process on their end.

THANKS CD5!

2.  PREFERENTIAL PARKING – “VIRTUAL PERMITS”

Preferential and Overnight Parking Districts have been established throughout the City to address residential parking impacts from vehicles from outside the community.  Beginning in 2018, the Department of Transportation began issuing permits in the form of hangtags. Permit holders must display the hangtags when the vehicle is parked within the district in order to avoid being cited. Unfortunately, hangtags are often inconvenient and cumbersome for some residents.

UCLA Transportation recently introduced the Bruin ePermit system where residents’ license plates serve as the permit. The Bruin ePermit system works similarly to a supermarket scanner with a license plate functioning as the barcode. When read, the numbers of the license plate are automatically referenced against the parking database to verify a valid permit. This license plate reading technology is used to manage parking in more than 20 California municipalities and colleges.

Last week, Councilmeber Koretz introduced a motion instructing the Department of Transportation (LADOT) to develop a pilot project that uses license plates as Preferential and Overnight Parking District permits.  By moving to a virtual permit system, the City could improve operational efficiency and offer numerous customer benefits, including, eliminating the need to display a hangtag or move hangtags from vehicle-to-vehicle and reducing paper, plastic, and resources used during permit production and distribution.

8.  CENSUS 2020 – GOODWILL AMBASSADORS NEEDED

Help Los Angeles get the federal funding & representation we deserve!

The 2020 Census is fast approaching. Los Angeles County ranks as the hardest-to-count county in the nation. Hard-to-count areas include neighborhoods with limited access to the internet, those with high concentrations of renters, people experiencing homelessness, and immigrant communities that may be hesitant to participate in the Census. LA needs your help to ensure all of our communities are counted accurately, so we can receive the federal funding and representation we deserve!

The Census Goodwill Ambassador (CGA) program is an effort by the City of Los Angeles to recruit, train, and deploy volunteers to educate and motivate hard-to-count populations before the 2020 Census. CGAs will lead grassroots efforts in their neighborhoods to educate Angelenos on how census data determines federal funding for our schools, social and health services, and infrastructure.

So what would a CGA do? Here’s some examples:

  • Host an event at a Census Action Kiosk (CAK) to educate community members about the census, address their concerns, and/or to help them fill out the census survey itself.
  • Volunteer at City and/or County events to promote Census 2020.
  • Recruit more ambassadors and/or conduct a CGA training of your own: we need as many CGAs as possible!

If you’re interested and/or have any questions, please contact your Neighborhood Empowerment Advocate, or call (213) 978-1551 Monday-Friday 9 am – 5 pm.

9.  UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS

40 Years of UCLA Student Filmmaking – November 15 to December 15  at the Billy Wilder Theater.  In celebration of UCLA’s centennial, UCLA Film & Television Archive turns the spotlight on the university’s history of student filmmaking. Since the late-1940s, generations of students at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television have consistently demonstrated an eagerness to explore genre and form (animation, documentary, experimental and narrative), frequently with a vested interest in contemporary cultural politics. This retrospective focuses on the first four decades of student filmmaking at UCLA, drawing from the Archive’s collection of over 1,500 vintage student works.  Click here for more information.
