1.  FIRE SAFETY & EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

Although our neighborhood is not a high-risk location for brush fires, we must still remain vigilant and take precautions to protect our community.  Here are a few safety tips and suggestions:

PROTECTION FROM SMOKE – N95 MASKS
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Department of Public Health recommend N95 respirators or P100 masks, both of which are approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for use by healthcare workers and firefighters.

LA Times Article – Wildfire Mask Safety

N95 masks may be purchased at local home improvement stores but they are often sold-out during wildfire emergencies.  However, the masks can be purchased online – just search Amazon and other online retailers for “N95 mask”.

2.  HALLOWEEN SAFETY

In order to assist the Los Angeles community in enjoying this fun-filled holiday as safely as possible, the Los Angeles Police Department has compiled a list of Halloween safety tips for children and their parents.

To keep all trick-or-treaters safe, please read and take heed of these important safety tips:

  • Drivers should look for children walking on the street, running and darting in between parked vehicles;
  • Especially when in or near neighborhoods, avoid using cell phones and texting while driving;
  • Keep houses and driveways well lighted so children know they can approach your homes;
  • When inspecting candy, if in doubt, just throw it out;
  • Be sure to follow all traffic signals and laws and walk only on sidewalks, not the street; and
  • Adults should always accompany children, trick-or-treat in groups or have children be accompanied by a trusted adult.

PET SAFETY
Don’t forget about the four-legged members of the family on Halloween. Pets can be confused and spooked by strange sounds and sights, and unfamiliar people in costumes, so keep pets indoors and away from the front door. As always, make sure your pets also have up-to-date identification.

Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween!

3.  WESTWOOD LIBRARY – TEMPORARY CLOSURE

WE ARE CLOSING FOR A FEW DAYS!

In case you haven’t visited us lately to see the signs, we will be closing for 10 days for new carpet installation (yay for new carpeting!). We’ll close as we normally would for Veterans Day on 11/11 then from 11/12 through 11/21, reopening to the public on Friday, 11/22/19 at 9:30AM. If you need assistance during this time please call or visit these branches:

West Los Angeles Branch Library
11360 Santa Monica Blvd (at Purdue)
310-575-8323

Brentwood Branch Library
11820 San Vicente Blvd. (near Montana)
319-575-8273

Palms Rancho Branch Library
2920 Overland Ave. (at the 10)
310-840-2142

During this time the book drops will be locked so visit one of the above branches for book returns. Our last day being open then will be 11/9/19 so please try to pick up your holds before then. As some of you probably know by now they have (temporarily) removed Westwood from the branches you can send books to. No you were not going crazy–this was done so you can choose another branch to send your books to and not miss a beat, or book as the case may be.

We look forward to seeing you back on or after November 22nd with our shiny new carpet!
