1.  LAPD REPORT – CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

The LAPD and the Brentwood Community Council shared a number of safety tips to keep your home safe from burglars.  While no measure is absolutely fool-proof, the more we all do to make it harder to commit a crime in our neighborhood, the sooner criminals will leave.

Harden Your Home:

  • GPS Tracking Devices, such as Apple Air Tag. Consider putting these inside expensive handbags, safes, expensive clothing (yes, even certain designer clothing has been stolen in these burglaries).  Name the AirTags something innocuous, such as “Fluffy,” or “Fido,” names that might signal a nearby pet, but not “Luxury Goods Safe.”
  • Dog – Advertise that you have a dog or dogs with signs.  This is also important in the event of fire.  OSH and many online retailers have “Beware of Dogs” signs.
  • Landscaping/Fencing – tall fences that are hard to scale, and landscaping that is hard to walk through, such as rose bushes with thorns, can provide a deterrent.
  • Locks – keep doors, windows, gates, locked.  Secure your electrical panels so that burglars can’t interrupt power to your home and alarm system.  Consider replacing standard length screws with extra-long screws on the hinges of exterior doors so doors are harder to kick in.
  • Lights – light up your yard … without lighting up the house next door.
  • Cameras – Consider security cameras. There are many different varieties.  Realize that ones that rely solely on Wi-Fi may be rendered inoperable by Wi-Fi jammers, a now somewhat common burglary tool.  Ring and Nest make various products, and companies such as Moore Protection install wired home security camera systems. There are also AI/live monitored camera systems, such as Deep Sentinel as well as laser motion sensors that will recognize the presence of someone before they reach your home.

5.  SEEKING MILITARY VETERANS FOR UPCOMING EVENT

From the Office of Congressman Ted Lieu:

Each year around Veterans day, Congressman Lieu brings together 6 to 8 veterans to join him in an event where the veterans tell a story about something they experienced while serving.  We look for a wide range of stories about things they experienced while serving – scary, exciting, inspirational, funny.  This is NOT about what the veteran is doing today unless they tie it into a specific experience that inspired this while they were in the Service.

The veteran tells their stories, and NO questions or discussion follows.  The idea is to acknowledge what he/she experienced and hopefully build a better appreciation for our veterans in the community.

We are looking for veterans or reservists who have had active duty and who live or work or volunteer in the CA 36 or nearby (including West LA VA) and would be willing to tell me their story and be considered for the event.

Any veteran interested can either email me one of his/her stories or I am happy to call the veteran and take notes as they tell me the story.

Many thanks,

Janet Turner
Deputy District Director, CA 36
