1.  LAPD REPORT – PREVENT FOLLOW-HOME ROBBERIES

Our LAPD Senior Lead Officer James Allen reported that last week, there was a follow-home robbery in Bel Air.

The victim had dinner at a well-known restaurant in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area.  He was wearing flashy jewelry that apparently caught the eye of some thieves. They followed him home to Thurston Circle in Bel Air, where they confronted him,  demanding his valuables. When the victim stalled, they shot him. He is currently in the hospital.

Please stay very aware of your surroundings when you are out, especially in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area.  Be particularly aware of anyone that might be following you.

Do not wear flashy, obviously expensive, jewelry that could tempt a thief, and do not post photos of yourself with such jewelry on social media.

If you feel someone is following you, do not drive home.  Instead call 911 en route and drive to the LAPD station at 1663 Butler Ave. (one block south of Santa Monica Blvd, a few blocks west of the 405 Fwy). It is also a good idea to alter your routes home and pay attention to vehicles that repeatedly make the same turns as you.

2.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

The Green Team recommends recent  articles and an upcoming webinar to learn more about trees, parkways and LA neighborhoods:

  1. Miller, Charles, “A Plastic Lawn is Way Worse than a Real One,” LA Times, August 5, 2024.  Contrary to what many have come to believer, artificial turf is bad for our ecosystem as well as our health. LA City no longer considers artificial turf a form of drought tolerant landscaping.
  2. Pergament, Danielle, “A tour of LA’s Neighborhoods, Let the Trees be Your Guide”  August 6, 2024, New York Times – LA has one of the most densely populated, diverse urban forests in the world, Familiar neighborhoods showcase different tree species.
  3. Renkl, Margaret, “Why Aren’t we Saving Urban Forests?”  April  22,2024,  New York Times. Saving mature trees is just as important as planting new trees to replace those already lost.
  4. Haggerty, Noah, “ California is home to millions of Urban Trees, What Happens When they Die?”  August 10, 2024, LA Times. LA conservationists are turning dead trees into lumber.
  5. Roach, Margaret, “Yes, Tree Collecting Is a Thing,” August 28, 2024, New York Times.  A new book explores this obsession and how it connects us with our own mortality.

Also, you may want to listen in to a Zoom webinar “Goodbye Grass! Save Water with a Native Landscape”  sponsored by The Thomas Payne Foundation and the LA Metropolitan Water District on October 2 from 6-8 pm.  Learn about rebates for replacing grass with sustainable landscaping.

3.  HIDING YOUR HOUSE PHOTOS ONLINE

With burglaries, break-ins and home invasion robberies on the rise in Southern California, experts say there is yet another tool at homeowners’ disposal to protect property.

See below links for tutorials on how to remove photos of your home on Redfin and Zillow as well as blur out your home on Google Street View as a security measure.

4.  CITY COUNCIL APPROVES MORE FUNDS FOR WEST LAPD

From the Westside Current:

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved a motion introduced by Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky to allocate $200,000 toward additional police overtime in Council District 5. The funds, drawn from the CD5 Neighborhood Service Enhancements fund, will be distributed to the LAPD’s Wilshire, West LA, and Pacific divisions to increase patrols and bolster public safety efforts.

“This funding is critical for bolstering public safety across the board, especially in light of the challenges posed by LAPD’s staffing shortages,” said Yaroslavsky. “Whether it’s increasing patrols, ensuring safe streets, or supporting no-camping enforcement efforts near schools and parks, these resources will help us address a wide range of public safety priorities throughout the district.”

1.  LAPD REPORT – CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

The LAPD and the Brentwood Community Council shared a number of safety tips to keep your home safe from burglars.  While no measure is absolutely fool-proof, the more we all do to make it harder to commit a crime in our neighborhood, the sooner criminals will leave.

Harden Your Home:

  • Install an alarm and USE it.  Alarm all windows: burglars will even make ladders out of lawn furniture to gain entry upstairs.  Include motion sensors and glass breakers.
  • Keep your house looking lived in, whether you are home or not.  Lights on, noise from a TV, stereo or radio.  Consider putting lights on timers.
  • Safe or Safes – use it, and have it bolted down.  If a safe is not installed properly, it is not effective. Consult a professional.  Consider multiple safes, potentially one acting as a dummy safe. While a convenient location, burglars are going straight to the master bedroom. Consider installing a safe in a child’s room instead.
  • Windows/Glass doors – consider having safety film installed – this makes glass harder to break.

2.  NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

National Preparedness Month is a national campaign that occurs every September. It aims to educate and empower Americans to respond to natural disasters or potential terrorist attacks.  With the 4.7 earthquake in Malibu earlier this week, it is a good reminder to prepare for potential disasters.

Below you will find links to several documents that could be helpful with emergency preparedness.

3.  DOG OWNER ETIQUETTE

HWPOA has recently received several complaints regarding dogs and dog owners:

Pick Up After Your Dog
Please clean up after your dog – always!  Remember that it is illegal, as well as unsanitary, unsightly and un-neighborly to leave your animal’s feces on the sidewalk or neighbors’ lawns.

Use Your Own Trash Bins
While everyone appreciates that you are picking up dog waste, please dispose of it in your own trash bin.  Please be respectful and do not use your neighbors’ bins.

Keep Dogs on a Leash
For the safety of your neighbors, children and other dogs, please keep your dog on a leash at all times when you are outside of your home.  We have had several past reports of dog attacks in the neighborhood, injuring both people and dogs.  Please follow the law and keep your dog on a leash.

Please be sure to remind everyone in your household that walks your dog about these rules – including your children, housekeepers, dog walkers, etc.  Thank you for your cooperation.

4.  SEEKING HOST FOR YOUNG FAMILIES MEET-UP

HWPOA is looking for one or more residents to spearhead a Halloween Meet-up for young families in the neighborhood.  We already have several volunteers but we still need a family who is willing to offer their home or yard to host a small neighborhood event.

With young students in many different schools, it might be a good way to meet neighbors.  The meet-up could be on a weekend afternoon, possibly with costumes, snacks and activities.

If you are interested in hosting or volunteering, please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.  Thanks!

3.  STOP SIGNS – SAFETY REMINDER

It has come to our attention that, for some time, there exists a disregard for stop signs in Holmby Westwood as well as elsewhere in the city. Some drivers appear to think stop signs are simply a suggestion. This has caused some near miss accidents and some near miss personal injury in our neighborhood. There have also been a couple of hit and run reports in nearby communities.

PLEASE MAKE A FULL STOP AT STOP SIGNS IN HOLMBY WESTWOOD, and PLEASE BE WATCHFUL IF YOU ARE WALKING OR DRIVING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Thank you.

The Green Team is thrilled to report a significant response to our door tag campaign, which introduced the updated parkway tree plan for Holmby Westwood streets and the new Holmby Westwood Green Team website. The positive feedback from several residents is a testament to the impact of our collective efforts. We’re excited to share a success story that not only demonstrates the website’s positive impact but also makes us all proud of what we’ve achieved together.

Recently, a neighborhood resident on one of the streets in Holmby Westwood was thinking about the advantages of having a parkway tree in front of his house.  As he was considering which tree species to plant, a door tag was delivered to his home. Upon receiving the door tag, the resident easily navigated the new Green Team website. He found the recommended tree species for his street in the “Updated Parkway Tree Plan” section, along with the “How to Plant a Tree in 5 Easy Steps” section. He then planted the right tree for his street. Here is the beautiful new white crepe myrtle that he planted.

This success is great for the residents, our neighborhood, and the city. We hope that other residents will also use the various resources available on the Green Team website as they plant new parkway trees and care for our beautiful tree canopy. Go Green!

5.  SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUNG FAMILIES MEET-UP

HWPOA is looking for one or more residents to spearhead a Halloween Meet-up for young families in the neighborhood.  We would be happy to put the details in our newsletter if several people would like to get together to plan it.  With young students in many different schools, it might be a good way to meet neighbors.  The meet-up could be on a weekend afternoon, possibly with costumes, snacks and activities.

If you are interested in hosting or volunteering, please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.  Thanks!

6.  UCLA NEWS: UPDATED POLICIES REGARDING PROTESTS

Dear Westwood Community,

This summer, UCLA staff and faculty have been assessing UCLA’s policies and processes related to free speech and campus safety, developing new initiatives to promote dialogue and well-being, enhancing efforts to combat discrimination in all its forms, and establishing plans to help Bruins rebuild connections following a challenging spring.

Today, we are sharing UCLA’s updated Interim Time, Place and Manner (TPM) policies. These policies govern certain uses of UCLA property, including supporting our community in hosting events on campus and defining when, where and how Bruins and visitors can exercise their First Amendment rights on campus.

As UCLA heads into the fall quarter with classes resuming on September 26, we plan to share additional communications and updates with you for your awareness.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Best,
Duane
