3.  PROTECT YOUR WIRELESS ALARMS FROM WI-FI JAMMERS

The LA Police are warning residents that burglars are now jamming wireless signals which disables Ring cameras and alarm systems. There are a few steps you can take to protect your wireless system from interference. You may need assistance from a technician to help with the following steps:

  1. Use a strong password
  2. Enable Encryption, which scrambles data. Many routers come with encryption disabled by default, so be sure to enable it in your router’s settings. WPAZ is recommended as the strongest type of encryption currently available.
  3. Change the default SSID to something unique that only you know. Default SSID set to the manufacturer’s name or something similar makes it easy for criminals to target specific types of routers.
  4. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server making it difficult for someone to intercept and read your data.

4.  WESTWOOD VILLAGE AMBASSADORS

The Westwood Village Ambassador Program, recently featured in the Daily Bruin, strives to enhance the safety, cleanliness, and community spirit in the Village. The program provides safety escorts, collaborates with local law enforcement, and offers assistance to people experiencing homelessness.

The ambassadors’ quick response and readiness to handle any situation have been widely praised by business owners and community members.

With life returning to something like pre-COVID norms, the program also helps manage large community events, from cleanup to the use of public transit.

Coming soon: the program expects to hire a plaza ambassador to make Broxton Plaza a pedestrian-only walkway.

1.  SECURITY UPDATE

Our HWPOA board members are keenly aware that our community has become a prime target for burglars. Recent burglaries have occurred on Warner Avenue, Malcolm, Lindbrook, Wyton, and Loring. At our next March 12th board meeting, all board members will be asked to start a WhatsApp group on both sides of their block. Neighbors looking out for neighbors has been very successful in other communities with which we communicate on a regular basis to assess what’s working and what’s not working to deter crime.

We encourage all HWPOA members to set up a WhatsApp on their block. Please ask your neighbors to join HWPOA so we can make security a priority community wide. If you see something, say something. If you see someone taking photos of homes on your street, take a photo of the person and text it to our Senior Lead Officer, James Allen; cell: 213-952-8396. These photos can help the police to identify burglars.

Due to the increased number of burglaries in our community,  SSA Security will be adding a second patrol car in Holmby Westwood for the next 120 days.

Look for other security tips in our weekly newsletter. Be safe.

8.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

UnCabaret
Thursday, March 14 at 8 pm
at The Nimoy

UnCabaret is a legendary forum for wildly fun, idiosyncratic, intimate, conversational comedy. Arguably the original “alt comedy” show – and a bona fide Los Angeles comedy institution – UnCabaret has long been an incubator and venue for what reads like a who’s who roster of innovative and subversive performers.

Join us on March 14 for the return of UnCabaret! Joined by musical director Mitch Kaplan with the band and an all female line-up of hilarious storytellers including Kira Soltanovich, Erin Foley, Laura Kightlinger and Jamie Bridgers.

Don’t miss their last performance at The Nimoy this season!
