3.  UCLA HELICOPTER FLIGHT PATHS

Thank you to our neighbors in WHPOA for the following information:

From time to time, neighbors have complained about helicopters flying close overhead. We just received from UCLA an updated flight-path map for helicopter pilots arriving and departing from Ronald Reagan Hospital, which directs pilots away from our neighborhood and several other nearby neighborhoods. The map is shown below

  • Approaches from the north, northwest and northeast are shown in green
  • Approaches from the south are shown in blue
  • The pink line is Sunset Blvd.

Of course, in case of real emergencies or truly time-sensitive deliveries, pilots will take what they regard as the most direct route.

6.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

Crossroads / The Exploding Digital Inevitable
In-person: Q&A with Ross Lipman, Michelle Silva (Conner Family Trust)
Sunday, July 30 at 7:00 PM
at the Billy Wilder Theater

Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” has generated a massive wave of renewed interest in the events surrounding the birth of the atomic bomb.  Now, viewers have an opportunity to view not only a seminal documentary about 1940s atomic weapons testing, but also one filmmaker’s view of how that documentary came together.

“Crossroads,” which was produced in 1976 by Bruce Conner, is 36 minutes of extreme slow-motion replays accompanied by an original score by composers Terry Riley and Patrick Gleeson. Its source material is government footage from the 1946 atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, which were dubbed Operation Crossroads.

When the film was restored in 2012, the effort was overseen by Ross Lipman, a former UCLA Film & Television Archive preservationist, and filmmaker Michelle Silva of the Conner Family Trust. Lipman was so fascinated by “Crossroads” that he produced his own live documentary about its unique production, called “The Exploding Digital Inevitable.” (A live documentary is a curation of media clips accompanied by analysis in live narration.)

As part of this program, The Exploding Digital Inevitable will be presented jointly with Crossroads for a total run time of 90 minutes.

1.  HEAT ADVISORY

A Heat Advisory for the LA Region will be in effect from Friday at 10am to Sunday at 11pm.  Los Angeles is expecting the first significant heat event of the season from Friday through Sunday. During this heat event, it is important to be proactive from heat exposure. As temperatures rise, the City of Los Angeles urges Angelenos to plan and prepare to avoid heat exhaustion in your communities and for yourself.

The public can keep cool by identifying and resting in shade or a building with air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. If you do not live in an air-conditioned building, you may take refuge from the heat at a public library, recreation facility, senior center or other public air-conditioned building near you. You may call 311 to identify the cooling facilities closest to you, or visit the Cool Spots LA App. Drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors or in the shade, stay in a cool area, and check up on relatives and neighbors, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Check on neighbors or others who may be sensitive to heat.

An updated list of all currently open cooling centers is available at this link: https://emergency.lacity.gov/updates

Take extra precautions if you work, exercise, or spend time outside. When possible, please reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. See images below for an explanation of signs and symptoms. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.  If you suspect a heat stroke, this is an emergency! Call 911.  Non-emergency information can be found by calling 311.

3.  METRO UPDATES – FARE CAPPING & METRO MICRO RIDESHARING

FARE CAPPING
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is introducing fare capping, affectionately known as “cappin’ the TAP,” to make traveling more convenient and cost-effective.

For most riders, this change requires no immediate action. Here’s what you need to know to keep riding smoothly. To ride the Metro, simply use your TAP card and pay as you go with stored value. The regular fare of $1.75, which includes two hours of free transfers, remains the same. The exciting update is that your TAP card will now automatically cap your fare at $5 per day or $18 for a seven-day period. This means you can enjoy unlimited rides for just $5 a day or $18 for a whole week. The more you ride, the more you save.

Metro Fare Capping – More Info.

METRO MICRO – Rideshare Service
Micro is Metro’s new on-demand rideshare service, offering trips within several zones in LA County. The new service is for short local trips and uses small vehicles (seating up to 10 passengers).

Micro is part of Metro’s family of services and has been designed hand-in-hand with our NextGen Bus Plan. The service is meant to be a fast, safe and convenient option for quick trips around town. Your first two rides are on Metro. Thereafter for the first 6 months of the program fares will be $1/trip, and at the end of that period will be subject to adjustment.

Hundreds of pick up/drop off points within the service zone, please visit the app, online booking portal, or call (323) GO-METRO to get started.

NEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT – BECOMING VAN LEO
July 15 through November 5, 2023
at the Hammer Museum

Becoming Van Leo is the first international survey of work by the late Armenian Egyptian photographer known as Van Leo, a pseudonym of his own making. Born Levon Boyadjian to Armenian parents in Turkey in 1921, the artist moved to Egypt with his family as a child, eventually settling in Cairo. There he rose to prominence as one of the Arab world’s most celebrated studio photographers from the 1940s to the 1960s. The exhibition traces Van Leo’s career from his earliest encounters with the camera in the 1930s, in which he used friends and family as models, through his experiments in self-portraiture of the 1940s and 1950s, and onward to his studio work, which extended into the 1990s.

2.  HWPOA BOARD MEETING – CANCELED

This month’s HWPOA Board meeting has been canceled.  Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, August 8.

Updated information will be posted at the beginning of August.

3.  SECURITY CONCERNS – CLARIFICATION

Clarification to last week’s Security Concerns:
SSA requests that their customers ask their monitoring company to contact the security guard in the patrol car first before trying to reach the customer. This saves precious response time. The general protocol for monitoring companies is to contact homeowners first, so sometimes in response to an alarm, monitoring companies may not see the homeowner’s preference to have the patrol guard contacted first. Moore Protection’s only protocol is to contact the guard first.  Please note:  Moore Protection is one of several companies who contact SSA first (prior to the resident) but, as was stated, not all companies subscribe to this protocol.

Please check with your monitoring company to ensure that contacts are in place so that, in the event of your alarm being activated, your patrol unit will be the first to be notified by your monitoring company.

Please note, HWPOA is not associated with SSA Security or Moore Protection in any way and does not endorse or recommend any security company.

Several homeowners have expressed concern with Frontier internet service.  They have experienced numerous service outages with Frontier.

6.  SICK SEA LIONS & DOLPHINS – CAUTION & HELP NEEDED

Harmful algae bloom is making marine wildlife sick. Sea lions and dolphins are stranding along jetties and some of our most popular beaches. The Aquarium of the Pacific and the Marine Mammal Care Center are seeking help to rapidly provide sick animals with medical care and places to rest and recover.

Volunteers are needed to help spot strandings, educate beachgoers, and help keep these animals and the public safe. If you’re willing to help, please visit https://bttr.im/7wq16 to start the process.

If you see a sick or injured animal, please call 1-800-39-WHALE. Please do not approach the animal.

Together, let’s ensure the well-being of these incredible creatures.

7.  UCLA BOTANICAL GARDEN NEWSLETTER

Dear Garden Friends,

If you’ve visited the Garden in the past two weeks, you may have noticed some changes! Construction has begun on the Garden’s stream. The project has required us to fence off portions of the Garden, but this 9-month water sustainability project will allow us to install a more conscientious stream and irrigation system. The new system will deliver water to our plants efficiently and create a more beautiful stream.

Don’t worry, there’s still so much to explore! Check out a map of open Garden paths at the bottom of this email. The Desert Garden gate is now open. Enter directly into our enchanting desert collection via Hilgard and Manning. Don’t miss the Chironia baccifera. It is in bloom near the Tiverton Entrance by the Hawaii section while you are meandering about.

I am happy to mention that we have some exciting summer programs! Click the link below to learn more about upcoming events like our family friendly ‘Be a Naturalist Day’ and a not-to-be-missed After Hours in the Garden. 2.  LAPD CRIME REPORT & SECURITY REMINDERS

VEHICLE, STOLEN
Incident #: 230811147
800 BLOCK MANNING AV  |  6/7/2023 @ 4:00 PM

HOMELESS MAN ENTERED GATED PROPERTY
HWPOA received the following report from a homeowner:
A homeless man entered a gated property in the 800 block of Beverly Glen Blvd. He had a syringe in his hand. He asked if he could stay. After being told he had to leave, he did so quietly. The homeowner doesn’t know how he was able to enter the property or how long he was there before being noticed. He could have climbed over the wall or entered quickly when the gate was opened for a car.

Needless to say, this could have ended badly if the man was taking drugs or was threatening. Security reminders:

  • Please consider keeping all gates closed and locked and installing motion detectors and lights in your front garden.
  • If you enter your driveway through an electric gate, don’t leave your car until you see that your gate has closed behind you.
  • When you exit your property through an electric gate, drive forward slowly enough to ensure your gate closes behind you.

3.  SECURITY CONCERNS

HWPOA received the following message from a homeowner.  Please note, HWPOA is not associated with SSA Security or Moore Protection in any way and does not endorse or recommend any security company.

From a Holmby Westwood neighbor:
We had a burglary at night recently, and SSA Security was the first to arrive.  If we had used Moore Protection instead of another monitoring company, our SSA guard would have been the first to be notified of our break in and would have arrived much sooner. Moore Protection is the only monitoring company that alerts the guard first. Instead, our monitoring company wasted valuable time trying to reach us before alerting the SSA guard. SSA only hires retired and off-duty police who are armed and not afraid to confront criminals and make arrests. The police arrived much much later.

We had all the bells and whistles to keep our home safe. Unfortunately, our empty trash cans were still on the street and there was no car in our driveway. These burglars are very professional and can get into any house and in minutes your treasured items are gone!  The police may not come right away. In the past 6 months, burglaries in our neighborhood and also in the surrounding areas are higher than last year! We think that it can only get worse!  We only need another 62 homes to sign up with SSA in order for us to get a second dedicated 24/7 car and guard in our neighborhood.

4.  GARBAGE COLLECTION NEXT WEEK – DELAYED A DAY

Trash pickup will be delayed one day next week, due to the July 4th holiday.  The LA Sanitation offices will be closed, and there will be no collection service on Tuesday, July 4. However, our 24-hour Customer Care Center will be available to assist you at 1-800-773-2489.

If your normal collection day is Tuesday, your bins will be serviced Wednesday. Wednesday collections will happen Thursday, etc. There are no changes to service on Monday, July 3.

5.  TRAFFIC ADVISORY – FEDERAL AVE. & WILSHIRE LANE CLOSURES

6.  WESTSIDE REGIONAL ALLIANCE OF COUNCILS – ROUNDTABLE

HWPOA President Sandy Brown participated in a meeting earlier this week with Mayor Karen Bass that was held at Belmont Senior Living.  Representatives from the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils listened to the mayor explain her ideas, solutions, relationships with the county and the federal governments, state of our city, and how to move forward sensibly, with proper funding, in a timely manner.

Mayor Bass is a consensus builder who began her political career at the grassroots level and who understands that working together is a win/win for everyone.  Sandy said, “I walked away knowing this city is in great hands!  I was very impressed with the Mayor’s knowledge, her know-how, and her tenacity to accomplish!”

7.  FIREWORKS SAFETY REMINDERS

From the LAFD:

All fireworks, even the so-called ‘safe and sane’ variety are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.  Please do not use fireworks of any type, including sparklers, or allow your children to do so.

Report Illegal Fireworks:
If you become aware of illegal fireworks use, there are several safe and secure methods for reporting fireworks in Los Angeles. These include:

IMPORTANT: Do not dial 9-1-1 unless you see someone being injured or at risk of immediate injury, or a fire or other emergency.

Pet Safety
Pets can be terrified by the noise, and many run away, often never being reunited with their families. In addition, many people may not realize that dogs can feel the air pressure change when fireworks are discharged nearby, causing deep anxiety and stress, or that “glow” sticks are poisonous to pets.

Impacts on Others
In addition to pets, private fireworks can also impact other neighbors:

  • Our patriotic veterans may have bad combat-related flashbacks
  • Older adults will be frightened and not know how to “turn the noise off”
  • Babies and small children will be terrified and the noise will hurt their ears

More information can be found at:

8.  GUIDE TO FIREWORKS SHOWS & FESTIVITIES

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Ready the red, white and blue!  Independence Day falls this year on Tuesday, July 4. And communities throughout the Westside and South Bay, including near Westwood and Century City, are prepping such star-spangled celebrations as carnivals, concerts, parades, picnics and, of course, firework extravaganzas.

Do note the date of events, as not all occur on July 4th. Plus, always confirm with organizers that activities are proceeding as planned.

Enjoy the holiday, and Happy Fourth of July, from Patch!
