Fourth of July Volunteers Needed!
Without volunteers, HWPOA cannot sponsor our annual July 4th Parade and Picnic. We all look forward to this very special community event but it cannot happen without volunteers to help pull it together. HWPOA Board member, Caron Schwartz will chair the big celebration but she needs help!

3. LADWP POWER OUTAGES
A message from City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky:
As a result of Friday’s winter storm, an overwhelming number of neighborhoods across Los Angeles experienced power outages, including many in Council District 5 (Hancock Park, Bel Air, and others).
Earlier, I spoke to the General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to express frustration at the amount of time it has taken to restore power. I was told that all available LADWP personnel were deployed throughout the City. However, LADWP has experienced Level 3 damage to the electrical grid, which is on par with the level of damage DWP expects from a magnitude 6 earthquake or higher.
I know for many of you last weekend was overwhelming and incredibly frustrating. As ratepayers, you deserve a reliable and resilient power grid. To that end, I will be calling on LADWP to present their plan for improving resiliency and reducing the frequency of outages at the Energy and Environment Committee, which I chair. It is my goal to ensure that the City is doing everything we can to ensure reliable service and to prevent future situations like the one we just experienced.
In the meantime, please continue to contact 311 to report any clogged storm drains, downed trees, or mudslides in your neighborhood. Many storm-related costs, including spoiled food, are reimbursable through your homeowners or renters insurance providers.

4. COVID STATE OF EMERGENCY ENDS IN CALIFORNIA
Earlier this week, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation terminating the state’s COVID-19 State of Emergency, as previously announced in October.
The state’s SMARTER Plan will maintain California’s operational preparedness to address the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to guide the state’s work to support communities across the state. Additionally, COVID-19 vaccines, testing, and treatment continue to be available at sites within local communities across the state.
What SMARTER stands for:
- Shots – Vaccines are the most powerful weapon against hospitalization and serious illness.
- Masks – Properly worn masks with good filtration help slow the spread of COVID-19 or other respiratory viruses.
- Awareness – We will continue to stay aware of how COVID-19 is spreading, evolving variants, communicate clearly how people should protect themselves, and coordinate our state and local government response.
- Readiness – COVID-19 is not going away and we need to be ready with the tools, resources and supplies we will need to quickly respond and keep public health and the healthcare system well prepared.
- Testing – Getting the right type of tests—PCR or antigen—to where they are needed most. Testing will help California minimize the spread of COVID-19.
- Education – California will continue to work to keep schools open and children safely in classrooms for in-person instruction.
- Rx – Evolving and improving treatments will become increasingly available and critical as a tool to save lives.
5. TAX DEADLINE EXTENDED
California is extending the state tax filing and payment due dates to October 16, 2023 for Californians impacted by the winter storms in December and January. This aligns California with the Biden Administration, which announced that the IRS extended various due dates until October 16, as well.

6. WESTWOOD VILLAGE AMBASSADORS
From the Westwood Village Improvement Association:
The Westwood Village Ambassador Program operates seven days a week and provides a friendly and safe atmosphere in the Westwood Village District.
Are you working late? Ambassadors will escort you to your vehicle. Are they stuck in the rain? Ambassadors will walk with you beneath their umbrellas to your destination.
Maintenance Ambassadors handle upkeep in alleyways and sidewalks. Services include trash collection, cleaning, graffiti and flyer removal, sidewalk power-washing, and reporting of structural issues.
The Quality of Life Ambassador primarily focuses on providing outreach information. The Quality of Life Ambassador is specifically trained to interact with and help individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

8. RED CARPET PREMIERES – STREET CLOSURES
There are several movie and red carpet premieres coming up in Westwood Village, which will involve various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue:

Warner Brothers will hold the “SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS” premiere at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 14th, at the Regency Village Theater.
9. UCLA FACULTY CLUB – DINNER SERVICE
Effective the week of Monday March 6, we will offer dinner on Tuesday and Thursday nights only, 5 pm – 8 pm. The location of dinner service will be the Main Dining Room.
Small Bites, along with Full Bar Service, are available Monday through Friday, 4 pm to 8 pm, in Playa Café and in the Sherie Bar and Lounge.

10. ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO
SECOND SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES

ZARĘBSKI PIANO DUO – Coming to us from Poland, pianists Piotr Różański and Grzegorz Mania will delight us with a piano four-hands program titled From the Salons of Vienna, Berlin and Warsaw, with sprightly dances and lush waltzes from composers Paderewski, Moszkowski, Friedman, Żeleński, Godowski and Zarębski.
This new concert series is in addition to our signature Sunday concerts at the library. Unlike the Sunday concerts, which take over the entire library while it’s closed, the Second Saturday concerts will be much more informal — they will take place upstairs in the alcove by the balcony while the library is open for regular business. Starting at 3:30 p.m., concerts will last approximately an hour. This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to live classical music and musicians in the casual, safe, familiar setting of our local library.

Maestro James Conlon, world-renowned conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Opera, shares his passion for the legacy of French composer Claude Debussy in conjunction with the Los Angeles Opera’s production of Debussy’s landmark work, Pelléas et Mélisande. Prince Golaud returns home with a mysterious new bride, but wedded bliss soon gives way to suspicion and jealousy as Mélisande grows closer to his half-brother Pelléas in Debussy’s one and only opera.
The program will be followed by a reception with Maestro Conlon.
ART EXHIBIT – “Ginger Q: AS W/IN SO W/OUT”

AS W/IN SO W/OUT is an exploration of tension. This exhibition will challenge viewers to examine the push and pull created from delicate and durable materiality. At the core of the collection is the theme of strain and equilibrium between the exterior and the interior, between distance and intimacy. Through her sculptural interpretations, Ginger Q’s exhibition displays the suspension between differing forces and the intrinsic balance among them.
