  • Regularly scheduled Monday will be picked up Tuesday
  • Regularly scheduled Tuesday will be picked up Wednesday
  • Regularly scheduled Wednesday will be picked up Thursday
  • Regularly scheduled on Thursday will be picked up Friday
  • Regularly scheduled on Friday will be picked up Saturday

Our regular collection schedules will resume on Monday, January 9, 2023.

3. SECURITY REMINDERS – VACATION TIPS

Here are a few suggestions to stay safe during the holidays and while you’re on vacation:

  • Porch pirates are in maximum overdrive. Remove your packages as soon as possible from your front door, and have a friend check your house daily if you’re planning on being away. If you work at an office that will be staffed while you are away, have your packages delivered to the office address. Amazon packages can be delivered to a nearby Amazon locker.
  • Make sure trash cans are not left out after trash day.
  • Two cars always in the driveway, with lots of dust, are one indicator you may be away.
  • Newspapers and mail piling up is another indicator that you are away. Stop service while you’re away, or have a friend pick up for you every day.
  • If you’re home and hear an unexpected knock, answer from inside and say, “we” can’t open the door right now. It lets possible criminals know you are not a good target. Barking dogs are also a great deterrent.
  • Alarms on, windows locked, when you are away, even if it’s just a short errand.
  • Put your indoor and outdoor lights on timers, so they will go on regardless of whether or not you are in town. This is also a great way to ensure that you never come home to a dark house at night.
  • Ladder on the side of the house? Many criminals access second floors using items on your property. Keep access points to your backyard and sideyards locked or otherwise not easily accessible to criminals.
  • Don’t leave items visible in cars, and certainly do not leave your key fobs in your cars.

4. CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

LA Sanitation & Environment has curbside collection for Christmas trees, making it convenient to properly and safely recycle your tree.

3 ways to schedule Christmas tree collection:

  • Call our 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489
  • Visit MYLA311 website and create a “Bulky Items” ticket and select “Christmas Tree” in the drop down menu
  • Create a request by clicking the green SERVICE REQUEST tab on the right of the screen of our homepage. Create a “Bulky Items” ticket and select “Christmas Tree” in the drop down menu

How to recycle your Christmas tree:

  1. REMOVE all decorations, tinsel, and stand from the tree.
  2. CUT* the tree into pieces, if needed, to fit into green bin.
  3. PLACE the tree pieces inside the green bin and put out for regular pick-up on collection day.

*If your Christmas tree is too big to cut and place inside the green bin, simply place the tree curbside next to your green waste bin on collection day.

Flocked trees and artificial trees can’t be recycled. Please place them in the black container to go to the landfill.

LASAN will recycle Christmas trees through February 4, 2023 and use them to produce compost and mulch that is available to residents for free.

5. HOLIDAY RECYCLING & E-WASTE

The UCLA S.A.F.E. Center collects household hazardous and electronic waste in order to keep these items out of the landfills, where they can contaminate soil and groundwater. There is no charge for residents from City of Los Angeles and County of Los Angeles to drop off residential materials.  Some of the most common items we see at the holidays are as follows:

Accepted items:

  • LED string lights
  • Light bulbs
  • Batteries (accepted but please tape terminals first)
  • Small kitchen appliances
  • Cleaning products
  • Old or broken electronics (accepted but please remove data first)

Items that are NOT accepted:

  • Christmas lights (not accepted – please place in trash)
  • Toys (not accepted – please place in trash)

UCLA S.A.F.E. CENTER
550 Charles E. Young Dr. West

Hours of Operation:
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
E-waste is only collected on Saturdays at this location

Please note that the UCLA SAFE Center will be closed December 22-25, 2022, December 29-31, 2022, and January 1, 2023.

For more information about what is and is not accepted and for a list of locations, visit lacitysan.org/safecenters

6.  MEASURE ULA – NEW REAL ESTATE TRANSFER TAX

Measure ULA, which was approved by the people of the city of Los Angeles during this past November’s Election, will create a 4% real estate transfer tax for properties over $5 million.  We are passing along the following information, provided by a local realtor, to help you understand the new tax:

MEASURE ULA affects transfer taxes on properties sold in the city of Los Angeles over $5,000,000.  Transfer taxes are a large part of typical Seller closing costs; they’re standard costs of sale in our city imposed upon all transactions.

Since July 1, 1991, transfer taxes were and currently are:

  • $1.10 per $1,000 to the County of Los Angeles
  • $4.50 per $1,000 to the City of Los Angeles

This totals $5.60 per $1,000.  So, for a sale of $5,000,000 for example, transfer taxes add up to $28,000 ($5.60 X 5000 = $28,000).

Now, for escrows closing on or after April 1, 2023, with MEASURE ULA in place, the City of Los Angeles will impose an additional 4% transfer tax at closing.  So, if you sell your home for $5,000,000 and it closes on or after April 1, 2023, that means an additional $200,000 transfer tax will be owed.

Put simply:

  • Pre-ULA, the transfer tax on a $5,000,000 sale is $28,000.
  • On or after April 1, 2023, with ULA, transfer tax on the same $5,000,000 sale will be $228,000 ($28,000 + an additional $200,000 = $228,000).
  • This 4% increase affects all sales closing on or after April 1, 2023 if the price falls between $5,000,000 and $9,999,999.

So, it goes to follow that if the sale is, for instance, $6,000,000, it’s an additional $240,000, if the sale is $7,000,000, it’s an additional $280,000, and so on.

And if the sales price is $10,000,000 or over, the transfer tax increase becomes 5.5%.

Put simply:

  • Pre-ULA, the transfer tax on a $10,000,000 sale is $56,000.
  • On or after April 1, 2023, with ULA, transfer tax on the same $10,000,000 sale will be $606,000 ($56,000 + an additional $550,000 = $606,000).

The above only affects property in the “City” of Los Angeles, so for example, areas like Beverly Hills or Malibu aren’t affected by this additional tax.  Neither is Santa Monica, but Santa Monica has its own new additional tax schedule called Measure GS. This Measure will take effect on March 1st, 2023 and under this new Measure, properties sold at $8,000,000 or above will be taxed an additional 5.6% of the purchase price.

This is an enormous, very impactful set of changes and I want to be sure you know about them before making any decisions about the sale of your home.  This is a very big consideration and property owners should understand its implications.

7.  WESTWOOD LIBRARY – HOLIDAY HOURS

The Westwood branch library will have the following hours during the holidays:

  • We will be open this Saturday, December 24th, at 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
  • We will be closed on Monday, December 26th.
  • On Saturday, December 31st, we will be open 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (so we are closing 30 minutes early).
  • We will be closed on Monday, January 2nd.

Branches that are normally open on Sunday will be closed those weekends.

Happy Holidays everyone!

4. STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER

COVID-19 cases are rising in LA County, and other viruses such as the flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are circulating too. Here are some measures you can take to stay safe and healthy this winter.

COLD MEDICINE SHORTAGE
Californians flocking to drug stores across the state are facing empty medicine shelves as three major respiratory viruses spread rapidly.  Southern California residents sick with influenza, RSV or COVID-19 are having to contend with picked-over and empty medicine shelves in pharmacies this week, according to multiple reports.

Drug stores have reported shortages in fever reducers such as Motrin and Tylenol — a situation that is sounding the alarm statewide as emergency rooms across the state fill up to accommodate both children and adults sickened with respiratory viruses circulating. California — particularly Southern California — is experiencing an unusually bad flu and RSV season.

5. DMV NEWS – REAL ID DEADLINE EXTENDED

For the third time, the federal government has passed down a massive extension on the deadline to get a REAL ID.

Residents of California have an additional 24 months to obtain their REAL IDs, a document that will be necessary to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings, after the Department of Homeland Security on Monday extended the enforcement deadline to May 7, 2025.

Officials said the extension is needed, in part, because of lingering problems from COVID-19 that caused backlogs in state agencies charged with issuing driver’s licenses.

To apply for a REAL ID, Californians should visit

2.  HOLIDAY THEFT PREVENTION

‘Tis the season to be… stealing!  Please be aware of the following and take appropriate precautions:

Follow-home robberies have occurred in several areas of Los Angeles. The suspects target people wearing expensive jewelry that is very visible and driving high-end vehicles.  The best prevention is always being aware of your surroundings and when leaving a shopping center, night club or restaurant. When driving in your vehicle, always check your mirrors to see if you’re being followed. If you believe you’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station. If you are unable to get to a police station, drive to a crowded public place and call police.

Porch Pirates are still stealing packages from your home while you’re away. Think about having deliveries sent to work and have your porch cleared by neighbors if you’re not home. If you’re ordering now, and going on vacation, check the delivery dates and think about delaying shipment.

Trash Cans should be removed on pickup day and not left out an extra day. Those are sure indicators you’re not home — EVEN if you are, which can be even more dangerous.

2.  LADWP NEWS – TREE CARE WEBINAR

Looking for tips on how to keep your trees and landscape thriving during the drought? Join the LADWP for a webinar on Wednesday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. to hear from our experts on how you can save water and keep your trees and gardens green at the same time!

Keeping our trees healthy during the drought is important to help save energy and lives during extreme heat. Join LADWP & partners as they share how to properly care for mature trees, and create and maintain California Friendly, water efficient landscapes during a drought. Learn about the types of trees and plants that are appropriate for the Los Angeles climate and how to sustain them with LADWP’s water conservation programs and rebates.

RSVP today at: http://ow.ly/TI4L50LQpTc

3.  DOCKLESS SCOOTERS

Both the City of Los Angeles and the State of California regulate use of dockless scooters.  You can report issues related to dockless scooters and bicycles to MyLA311 – either on your smartphone app, or online at https://myla311.lacity.org, or call 311.

Providers are responsible for closing out service request information and must share the status of the service request. Providers have 2 hours to respond to a request (7 a.m. – 10 p.m.) and must have a team available 24 hours a day.  Any vehicle that has not been moved after 5 days is subject to impound by the Bureau of Sanitation.

Lyft has removed its scooters and shared bicycles from the region citing a lack of long-term commitments from area municipalities.  Read the entire article at https://smdp.com/2022/11/21/lyft-withdraws-bikes-scooters-from-los-angeles/

Issues with Bird Scooters – See an issue with a Bird scooter you would like to report? Bird makes it easy to report it: When the Bird app is opened, you’ll see a little triangle on the bottom left-hand side of your Bird app. Click this button, and you’ll find three different options: report a “Badly Parked Bird’’, “Damaged Bird,” and “Contact Bird.”

This is the most efficient way to report issues to the Bird Team, and you do not have to be a rider to use this feature; just download the app.

6.  HAMMER MUSEUM – TRANSFORMATION NEWS

The Hammer Museum’s more than two-decade-long building transformation is about to cross the finish line: The museum said Tuesday it will premiere the final phase of its expansion and renovations project on March 26, 2023.

That includes a new, far more visible entrance on the corner of Wilshire and Westwood boulevards designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture, which has steered the project for more than 20 years. The new entrance faces the Metro D (Purple) Line station expected to open in 2027. The milestone will also be marked by the largest presentation of the Hammer Contemporary Collection as well as the debut of a new street-level gallery and sculpture terrace along Wilshire Boulevard.

7.  WAYS TO GIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Here are a few ways you can help the community this holiday season:

MEALS ON WHEELS – WEST LA
Meals on Wheels-WLA has been serving our community for over 46 years and we hope to continue for many more years to come, BUT WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP.  Our food costs are up 41% since pre-pandemic levels. During the same period, the number of at-risk Veterans, vulnerable seniors and homebound that we serve increased by 61%.  Many clients are unable to cover the food costs, yet Meals on Wheels of West Los Angeles never turns anyone away who is unable to pay.

The perfect storm of higher food costs, increased numbers of individuals needing our services and fewer clients able to pay is having a crippling effect on our efforts to continue our mission. Please consider donating whatever you are able to so that we can continue our vitally important charitable work.

BLANKET & SOCK DRIVE – SPREAD THE WARMTH
The Department of Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment is organizing a donation drive to collect cold-weather items for homeless individuals across Los Angeles.  They are collecting donations of new and gently used blankets, sleeping bags, and socks throughout December 30.

Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays at many city yards.  The nearest location is:

West LA District Yard
2027 Stoner Avenue

For more information, please see flyer below.

LAPD HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
Please consider supporting West LAPD’s Holiday Toy Drive.  Gifts (unwrapped and new toys for kids ages 8-12) may be dropped off in the lobby of the WLAPD Station at 1663 Butler Ave.  See flyer for more information.

FRIENDS OF WESTWOOD LIBRARY
Your local library needs your help!  Donate to the Friends of Westwood Library to help our library all year long.  We buy the Westwood Library extra books to supplement City funding — we fund extra programs for children, teens, and adults — we pay for a Computer Aide – and much more.
