1. INDOOR MASKING UPDATE

From the County of Los Angeles:

Due to reduced transmission and hospitalizations, Public Health is not moving forward with universal indoor masking. Wearing masks in indoor public places is still strongly advised to slow the spread of COVID-19.

2. HELICOPTER NOISE & FLIGHT PATHS

HWPOA received several complaints recently from residents concerned about the noise of helicopters flying over the neighborhood. Many of the helicopters are headed to (or coming from) UCLA Medical Center. We contacted UCLA to let them know of our concerns.

UCLA has reminded helicopter pilots of the preferred flight path and has issued a letter to the air operators to urge their pilots to avoid flying over residential neighborhoods whenever reasonably practicable. Attached is the letter that was sent in June and the flight path reminder that is posted at the helipad.

Also, below is the email that was sent to Westwood Hills in May regarding helicopters flying into the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

UCLA will notify UCLA Health to continue reminding the flight operators of the preferred flight paths.

3. MOVIE PREMIERES – STREET CLOSURES

There are several movie premieres coming up in Westwood Village, which will involve various sidewalk and street closures around the area of Broxton Avenue between Weyburn Avenue and Le Conte Avenue:

“Luck” – Saturday, July 30th, 2022
AppleTV+ will be hosting the premiere of “Luck” on Saturday, July 30th, 2022 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Ave.

“Bullet Train” – Monday, August 1, 2022
SONY will be holding the premiere of “Bullet Train”, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2022 at the Regency Village Theater, located at 961 Broxton Ave.

“Prey” – Tuesday, August 2, 2022

4. “INFLATION RELIEF” PAYMENTS – COMING SOON

From KTLA News:

For all the Californians paying out the nose for housing, gas, food and more, a small bit of relief is on the way.

Legislators announced a round of “inflation relief” payments – also known as the Middle Class Tax Refund – would go out to more than 20 million state residents later this year. Payments will range from $200 to $1,050. The size of your check depends on your income, filing status and number of dependents.

Currently, the State Department is processing routine passport applications in 8 to 11 weeks and expedited passport applications in 5 to 7 weeks. Apply for a passport or renew your passport before planning a trip.

1. REDUCING THE RISKS OF COVID 19

If LA County remains in the High COVID-19 Community Level for two consecutive weeks, universal indoor masking will be implemented on July 29 to help slow the rate of transmission and protect those most vulnerable.

If the county implements universal indoor masking, residents, and workers will need to wear masks in all indoor public spaces, including shared office spaces, manufacturing facilities, retail stores, and at indoor events. Indoor areas of restaurants and bars, children’s programs, and educational settings would need to institute universal masking as well.

3. COYOTE SAFETY TIPS

In order to keep family and pets safe, homeowners in our neighborhood should take safety precautions for potential encounters with coyotes.

The following Safety Tips are from the LA Animal Services website. You can also download a more detailed Coyote Brochure

DETERRENTS & HOME SAFETY

Trash cans should be securely fastened so wildlife is not invited to feed from them. Ammonia or pepper sprinkled in the trash may also discourage a scavenging coyote.
Remove pet food dishes when your pet has finished eating and do not leave food outside. Pick ripe fruit and clean rotten produce off the ground.
Trim hedges and clear brush from under trees and around your home so the coyotes do not have a hiding place.
Special coyote fencing is available and can be found online.
Close off crawl spaces under porches, decks and sheds. Coyotes use such areas for resting and raising young.
Keep your property well lit at night, especially when you go out with your dog for the last potty break before bed.

COYOTE ENCOUNTERS – KEEP CHILDREN & PETS SAFE

Small animals and children should not be left outside unattended if there are coyotes in your area. Never leave small children and pets unattended outdoors even if your yard is fenced.
Walk your dog on a leash at all times — not only is it the law, but it will keep your pet safe. Do not allow your dog to interact or “play” with a coyote.
If you see coyotes, make loud noises and scare them away: bang pots and pans, use a whistle, etc. BUT, they are smart and you cannot keeping making the same noise and expect the coyotes to fall for the same trick over and over.
When you are walking your dog in areas known to have coyotes, you can carry a loud whistle or even an umbrella that you can open and close rapidly to scare them away. Unlike the approach with an aggressive dog, you can raise your arms above your head and stomp your feet while shouting at the coyote to scare them away.
Bring cats and dogs inside at night.
Feeding wildlife is illegal! Do not approach or feed wild animals, including coyotes. It is unsafe and a violation of the law.

Looking for a unit or room for a newly arrived Ukranian refugee. She is 32 years of age, a former ballerina, has a drivers license and car. She is currently living in a hostel but working by cleaning people’s homes. She is clean-cut and very industrious and willing to pay a bit for her lodging. She cannot pay market rates for a unit, so perhaps out of the kindness of your heart, you could barely charge. After leaving the war torn Ukraine, she is looking for a quiet place to put her head and body.

Burglars many times will easily access the second floor with unsecured ladders or even stack patio furniture to gain access. Let’s make it more difficult by securing windows and doors, and always arming alarms prior to leaving home.

The firefighters from Fire Station #71 were outstanding and so gracious as they led the parade to the park. We also really appreciate our LAPD team, under Captain Jonathan Tom. Sgt. Wilkerson from the Dept. of Transportation assisted with traffic control to keep neighbors safe during the parade.

EARLY MORNING HELICOPTER
Several residents reported that around 4:00 AM last Friday, July 1 a police helicopter was hovering over the neighborhood near Charing Cross and Sunset, broadcasting messages to a particular home. We received information from the LAPD that the incident involved a “fake call of a child shooting his family”. No one was shot and no AR-15 in the home.

A homeowner on the 10400 block of Lindbrook reported that on Friday, July 1 between 10-11 am, theives used a wire cutter to steal gardening equipment from the gardeners truck. Please be sure to tell your gardeners to take safety precautions with their equipment.

4. WESTSIDE PAVILION MACY’S – OFFICE PROJECT

Westside Pavilion Macy’s Adapted
Ready for Reuse as Office and Work Space

Developer GPI Companies and architect HLW have announced that the modernization and adaptive reuse of the former Westside Pavilion Macy’s is now complete and ready for its second life as a modern office campus. While most of the facade was replaced with glass, the prominent arches were preserved to reflect the former use of the building.

The project now features an open-air courtyard and many interior lobbies, balconies, and access to natural light. In addition to all of this, many seismic upgrades to the building and landscaping upgrades to the property were completed. Modernization and adaptive reuse of other portions of the Westside Pavillion are still ongoing.

California Driver’s License card holders are encouraged to upgrade or apply for a REAL ID to continue to use a California driver’s license or identification card to fly within the United States. Starting May 2023, the federal government will no longer let you use other versions of your driver’s license to pass through airport security checkpoints when you are catching a domestic flight.

2. FIREWORKS – ILLEGAL TO USE IN LOS ANGELES

From the LAFD:

All fireworks, even the so-called ‘safe and sane’ variety are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. It may be tempting to acquire personal fireworks for your 4th of July celebration, but this year we ask you to “Think About Your Neighbors.” Personal fireworks are known to negatively affect children, pets, and combat veterans. In addition, the wildfire danger is ever present and vegetation moisture levels are significantly drier this year than previously recorded.

Those who use, possess, or transport any type of firework may be subject to criminal prosecution – or worse yet, painful and debilitating injury.

What if I witness fireworks use in the City of Los Angeles?
Report illegal fireworks directly to the Los Angeles Police Department at any hour, using their online fireworks complaint form at:

LAPDonline.org/fireworks (NOTE: THIS IS SEASONAL ONLY)

This complaint form can also be found through the “My LA 311.” Download the app on your Android or Apple device. Type fireworks in the search bar, and click on “Fireworks – LAPD.”

NOTE: The fireworks complaint web form via browser or app assures the most efficient notification of Police Officers patrolling your community. Only call 9-1-1 for fireworks if someone is injured or there is an active fire.

3. STOP USING RAT POISON

Rat Poison Kills Pets and Wildlife

A homeowner reported that their dog was sick and upon visiting the animal hospital ER, the owner was informed that the dog had ingested rat poison. Luckily, the dog is recovering and will be OK.

Other neighbors have reported finding dead squirrels in their yards that were likely killed by rat poison.

Toxic rat poison has been banned in the state of Califormia – read article here. While less toxic rat poison may still be allowed, it may still be unsafe for pets and wildlife.

Please do not use rat poison!

5. WESTWOOD VILLAGE SPECIFIC PLAN AMENDMENT

From Los Angeles City Planning:

On May 31, the City Council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) voted to advance City Planning’s proposed amendment to the Westwood Village Specific Plan. The amendment to the specific plan is intended to promote economic relief measures to spur investment in Westwood, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic.

With vacancy rates in the neighborhood approaching 40%, City Planning’s recommendations would eliminate burdensome and outdated development restrictions, reduce parking requirements, and provide a streamlined alternative approval process for qualifying projects.

The amendment to the Westwood Village Specific Plan would speed up permitting for signage and change of use projects that do not require facade alteration, construction, or expansion, among other things. The amendment is now with the City Attorney, who will prepare the final ordinance on which the City Council will vote.

Happy birthday, America! After a year or two of COVID-related restrictions, cities and towns throughout the West side and South Bay/Long Beach region, including near Westwood and Century City, are back in the star-spangled swing with Fourth of July parades, events and fireworks extravaganzas.

July 4, 2022 falls on a Monday. Do note not all Independence Day events are on that date, with several spread throughout the holiday weekend or earlier. And always confirm with organizers that events are proceeding as planned.
