HIT AND RUN DEATH ON SUNSET
Last Saturday night, a man was struck and killed while crossing Sunset Boulevard. He was believed to have been a transient.  The man was crossing Sunset Boulevard on the southbound side of the street just east of Mapleton Drive, at 10:15 p.m. Saturday. He was walking outside of an unmarked crosswalk when a driver struck him and left him for dead. The driver continued eastbound on Sunset Boulevard, according to a watch sergeant at the LAPD’s West Traffic Division.

Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Police had no description of the suspect’s vehicle, and the investigation remains ongoing.

3.  HOLIDAY SAFETY

With the holidays fast approaching, and on any other given day, the LASD would like to remind the various communities we serve to remain vigilant and help us protect your homes and that of your neighbors, by following these burglary prevention tips:

  • Homeowners should make an attempt to give the impression someone is home at all times, which would include leaving a car in driveway, leaving lights on in and around the home at night.
  • Noise inside the house (leave TV or radio on) to give the impression someone is home.
  • Commercial security services that have become popular, inexpensive and easy to use, including but not limited to video recording devices.
  • Use pets such a dog for property protection and deterrence.
  • Most importantly, making contact with neighbors and looking out for one another’s homes.
  • We don’t want our residents to be paranoid; however, they should appropriately suspicious of unusual vehicles or persons slowly traversing through their neighborhood.
  • We encourage residents to ALWAYS and IMMEDIATELY contact law enforcement when they believe they are seeing something suspicious in the neighborhood.
  • Law enforcement recognizes the value of social media, but information should not just be posted on social media without also sharing with such information with local law enforcement agencies.

Have a safe and happy Holidays!

4.  HOLIDAY TRASH COLLECTION

There will be no curbside trash or recycling collections on Christmas Day or New Years Day. For the upcoming holiday weeks from Tuesday – Friday, garbage and recycling collections will be postponed by one day.

If you have any questions, please call the LASAN Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489.

5.  RIDE METRO FOR FREE – CHRISTMAS EVE & NEW YEARS EVE

All Metro Bus and Rail lines will be free to ride on the nights of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. This means no fare will be charged on Christmas Eve from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Christmas morning and from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

All Metro Rail stations with latched gates will be unlatched during this time. Metro will also run 24-hour rail service on New Year’s Eve, as well as enhanced service to the Rose Parade on Jan. 1.

Metro Bus and Rail will run on a Sunday/Holiday schedule on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day — both fall on Tuesdays this year. This means that bus lines that do not operate on Sundays will not run on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

Additionally, some Metro Bus lines may be impacted by detours due to holiday events. Check out Metro’s Planned Service Advisories page to see if your line will be detouring and for detailed bus routes.

2.  METRO CONSTRUCTION – WILSHIRE LANE CLOSURES

Metro contractors are continuing to relocate underground water, power and telecommunications equipment in Westwood.  Cable Installation at Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave. will take place as follows:

Monday, December 17 to Friday, December 21
9am to 3:30pm

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd. near Veteran Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions at Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave.

There will be no work on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1.

3.  HOMESHARING (AIRBNB) ORDINANCE

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

An ordinance regulating Airbnb and other home- sharing platforms in Los Angeles was unanimously approved Tuesday by the City Council, capping more than three years of debate.

The city has not had an ordinance regulating Airbnb, which connects travelers with hosts looking to rent out their home or a bedroom, but struck a deal with the company in 2016 for it to pay hotel taxes on behalf of its hosts under a three-year agreement.

The ordinance that was approved by the council allows qualified hosts to rent year-round, for which industry advocates had been lobbying. Hosts could petition for more than 120 days by meeting certain criteria, including that the property has not been the subject of too many nuisance violations.

The ordinance, which needs to be signed by Mayor Eric Garcetti to become official, would take effect on July 1.

4.  HOUSING CRISIS & SINGLE FAMILY ZONING

The following article is from the New York Times.  The article discusses the housing situation in Minneapolis, where the City Council recently eliminated single-family zoning.  This new ordinance will now allow residential structures with up to three dwelling units — like duplexes and triplexes — in every neighborhood. Minneapolis is believed to be the first major city in the United States to approve such a change citywide.

While this does not affect us in Los Angeles, it could be a sign of things to come.  The Holmby Westwood area is currently zoned for single family homes, but with the housing crisis in Los Angeles, it’s possible that the L.A. City Council will eventually propose a similar ordinance in Los Angeles.

5.  WESTWOOD LIBRARY – HELP NEEDED THIS SUNDAY

Dear Neighbors – Friends of Westwood Library is looking for a few volunteers to help set up and staff the free concert at the Library this Sunday afternoon (see below for concert info.). Teens would be great, and they can earn community service hours! But any able-bodied help would be most welcome.

We need help in moving tables, setting up chairs, serving refreshment after the concert and then breaking down and returning the library to its normal configuration.

You would need to be there for set-up, from 12:30 – 2 pm. The next time you would be needed is from 3:30 to 5 pm.  Even if you could do just one of these time slots, it would be helpful.

You are welcome to bring books, papers and quiet work to do at one of the tables in the back while the concert is going on. Or you can just stay and listen to the concert. Or you can leave after 2pm and come back by 3:30 pm.

Please let me know if you can help out. Just reply to the email address below.

Many, many thanks!

Best,
Terry Tegnazian

With the holidays – and holiday shopping – in full swing, it’s important to pay extra attention because this is when scammers thrive.

3.  ILLEGAL FIREWORKS IN HWPOA

A homeowner reported that on Saturday, November 24 around 11:00pm, she heard several loud explosions near the corner of Loring and Holmby.  It was discovered that the noises were fireworks set off at a nearby home.

All fireworks, including the  so-called “safe and sane” variety of fireworks, are are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.  Please keep our community safe and do not set off any kind of fireworks.  Thank you.

4.  NEW NAMES FOR METRO RAIL AND BUS LINES

Metro staff are recommending changing the names of Metro Rail and Bus Rapid Transit Lines to colors with letters to accommodate a growing system and make our rail and bus rapid transit network easier to understand.

Metro’s current transit line naming convention is inconsistent, and the system is growing and changing. All current line names are based on colors (Blue, Red, Gold, Purple, etc.) with one exception – the Expo Line. As the system grows, continuing with color names will mean selecting line names based on shades of color (i.e. Lime, Rose, Aqua, Olive, Lavender, etc.) rather than basic colors. This can pose visual and language barriers and can sometimes be difficult to decipher on maps and signage.

To see the proposed map of the name changes, please click here:

GROUP FOR PEOPLE WITH A CHRONIC LUNG CONDITION

I host a meeting every other month for people with chronic lung conditions (non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung conditions, also known as bronchiectasis or MAC) other than TB or cancer. It’s a very informal support and information group, free of charge, which has been ongoing for about 15 years. The meetings bring together people who all share a common health problem, so we can feel completely comfortable talking about our lung issues in a warm, supportive environment. Each of us has a history of diagnosis, treatment, and day-to-day experience that is very helpful for answering our questions and getting the benefit of people’s personal experience. Even with the best of doctors, this is an invaluable service.

We are affiliated with a national non-profit organization, NTM Info & Research (NTMir), formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease for the purpose of patient support, medical education, and research. The organization comprises patients, physicians and other medical practitioners, and researchers.

Our group is open to all and the next meeting will be on Monday, December 17, at 1:15 p.m., at my house, 641 Warner Avenue, in Westwood.

Please feel free to contact me for more information. I look forward to speaking with you and meeting you!
