1. BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY
Next Monday, August 14th is the first day of school for LAUSD schools, including Warner Avenue Elementary. Welcome Back!
Please be careful when driving around the neighborhood at drop-off and pick-up times, and if you are a parent of a student, please observe all safety regulations when dropping off or picking up your children. Let’s keep the neighborhood safe!
2. HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE
Greetings from the Green Team.
We are back at work and have several updates to share.
1. First, we hope that you are surviving the heat and not forgetting to water your street trees. Even if you have replaced your parkway lawn with drought tolerant plants, remember trees need more water than they get from a drip irrigation system. Artificial turf (which we strongly recommend against) can be extremely detrimental to the survival of mature trees since it cuts out parkway watering, heats up the soil beneath the turf, kills important soil nutrients, and creates a hot spot. Without water your trees will not be able to breathe and will suffer a slow and painful death. Remember, mature trees require many, many years to replace.
2. We need your help:
- Please send us your recommendations of gardeners, arborists, tree trimmers, landscape architects/planners and nurseries that you have used, recommend, and trust. We plan to share the list of recommended resources with Holmby Westwood residents.
. - Please send us the location/address of tree stumps in the neighborhood. We will be talking with the City about a project to remove all stumps in the neighborhood at one time.

3. Check out Bureau of Street Services updated website at https://streetsla.lacity.org/. You’ll find out how to Report a Tree Emergency and Request a Tree Permit and under the Urban Forestry Division tab you can get answers to FAQ’s about parkway trees.
4. Don’t forget that The Department of Water and Power has announced that Angelenos can return to a three-day-a week watering scheduling: customers with even numbered addresses should water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, while customers with odd numbered addresses should water on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Watering must be done before 9 am or after 4 p.m. and is limited to 8 minutes per station on watering days or 15 minutes twice a day with sprinklers that use water conserving nozzles. Hand watering is allowed every day during watering hours.
3. METEOR SHOWER THIS WEEKEND
From the Los Angeles Times:
The annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak this weekend, sending bright trails of light streaking across the night sky. With only a sliver of moon in the sky, conditions this year will be ideal for seeing lots of meteors.
“If you’ve got nice clear weather and a good dark sky, you go out just before dawn and you’ll see a Perseid per minute or so,” said NASA meteor scientist Bill Cooke. “That’s a pretty good show.”
This year’s shower is already active, but the main event will be this weekend, when the shower reaches its peak from Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Starting around 11 p.m. local time Saturday, a few meteors will start to show up — maybe one every 15 minutes, Cooke estimated. They’ll keep picking up the pace until before dawn on Sunday, when “you’ll see meteors appear all over the place,” he said.

Pianist PHYLLIS PAN, in the doctoral piano performance program at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, brings us a fascinating program titled The Elements: Earth, Air, Fire & Water, featuring works that reference each element, including a solo piano suite from Stravinsky’s well-known Firebird.
Second Saturday Concerts take place upstairs in the alcove by the balcony while the library is open for regular business. Starting at a NEW TIME, 3 PM, concerts will last approximately 90 minutes. For ADA accommodations, please call 213-228-7430 at least 72 hours prior to the event.
This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to live classical music and musicians in the casual, safe, familiar setting of our local library.
5. L.A. ZOO – TEEN COUNCIL
Join the L.A Zoo Teen Council For Conservation!
The Los Angeles Zoo is launching its second cohort of the L.A. Zoo Teen Council for Conservation to unite youth and create pathways towards a future centered on conservation solutions in Los Angeles. The application process opens on August 7th with applications due by August 25th at 11:59pm.

Harvest (1937)
With the name of Chez Panisse inspired by a character from Marcel Pagnol’s César (1938) it’s only fitting that we begin this series with Pagnol’s enchanting paean to agrarian France. After years of migration to the big cities, a remote village nestled on a hilltop is down to its last few inhabitants, including Pantrule (Gabriel Gabrio), a hulking but gentle hermit who longs to revive the town. When he encounters Arsule (Orane Demazis), a woman on the run looking to start over herself, the pair begin tilling the earth to grow wheat and hopefully revive a whole way of life. Pagnol suffuses every shot of their labor and the land with tenderness and care in a film about the beauty and dignity of the simple things.

Garden Concerts for Kids: Sonia De Los Santos
Saturday and Sunday, August 12 – August 13, at 4 pm
at the Getty Center
Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, Sonia De Los Santos exudes the joy she sings about. This whole-hearted concert includes songs from her three family music albums.
Singing in Spanish and English, Sonia’s music is inspired by various Latin American rhythms like son jarocho, cumbia and salsa, as well as folk traditions from the United States. It’s hard not to smile when she’s sharing some of her favorite things, like migrating birds, friendship, chocolate, and anecdotes about growing up in Mexico and realizing her childhood dream of moving to New York. In her highly interactive performances, kids and families love singing along in Spanish and English and dancing in and out of their seats while learning about musical instruments and rhythms from Latin America. Sonia’s messages of finding hope and connection in our global community inspire and excite children and grown-ups of all backgrounds.
