1.  ADOPT FIRE STATION #71

Dear Neighbors,

Fire Station 71 at the corner of Beverly Glen and Sunset serves much of Holmby Westwood. Several weeks ago the firefighters had their annual Pancake Breakfast, free to the community. It was an opportunity for families to tour the station, meet with some of the firefighters, and learn what happens when an alarm goes off.

Many Holmby Westwood neighbors stopped by with their children and grandchildren for a homestyle breakfast and to view the antique cars on display as well as the old fire truck. The voluntary contributions to the Pancake Breakfast help to provide the “creature comforts” that the City of LA deems unnecessary to the men and women who live there when on duty. Five homeowner associations make up the Adopt Fire Station 71 non profit group (Holmby Westwood Property Owners Assoc, Benedict Canyon Assoc., Residents of Beverly Glen, Comstock Hills Homeowners Assoc., and the Bel Air Assoc.)

Over the years, we have provided over $200,000. to improve the over fifty year old station including the HVAC system, repairs to equipment, separation between the beds for privacy, outdoor eating accommodations which the firefighters built, a TV in the recreation room, new kitchen appliances, a remodel of a room for up to date technology, and a gate on Sunset. Our next big project will be to remodel their tool room which is VERY outdated makes finding tools difficult. I don’t think it’s been changed in 50 years.

A recent request from the firefighters is to replace the six old recliner chairs in the Rec Room where the men and women relax and watch TV. The Adopt program would very much like to support their wishes.

If you would like to support our program, please send your tax deductible contribution to:

Fire Station # 71 also houses a paramedic ambulance and responds to auto accidents and, of course, fires. We sincerely thank them for all that they do to protect our homes and our families!

President

2.  FREE CONCERT SERIES AT WESTWOOD LIBRARY

The first concert in our groundbreaking Quartet-in-Residence Program at the Westwood Library was a huge success—with a standing-room-only crowd. In order to accommodate a larger audience more comfortably for the second concert, we’re moving upstairs into the library itself on a Sunday afternoon when the library is not otherwise open for regular business.

SUNDAY, JULY 13, 2014
2:30 PM
at WESTWOOD LIBRARY
1246 Glendon Avenue

The FIATO STRING QUARTET, our Quartet in Residence
at Westwood Library, will enchant with two of the most
beloved quartets:
Beethoven — String Quartet Op. 18, no. 6
Dvorak — String Quartet Op. 96, no. 12 (“American”)

All concerts are FREE, with free parking at the library.
Refreshments after the concert!

3.  SHAKESPEARE AT THE VA

The Shakespeare Center Los Angeles is performing Romeo and Juliet at the VA Japanese Garden through July 26.  The Japanese Garden at the VA is one of LA’s most stunning outdoor venues.  Don’t miss this extraordinary theatrical experience helmed by critically acclaimed director Kenn Sabberton (Shakespeare Center’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It).

Bring a picnic, dine in the garden and enjoy Shakespeare live on stage under the stars.  For tickets go to www.shakespearecenter.org.

4.  MOVIES IN THE PARK

Councilmember Koretz and the Westside Neighborhood Council are co-sponsoring a “Movie in the Park” summer series at the Palms Recreation Center, 2950 Overland Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90064.  Upcoming movies include Cool Runnings, Matilda and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  For more information, click here:

BABYSITTER AVAILABLE

Our 16 year old daughter (almost 17) is looking for baby sitter jobs this summer. She is a senior in high school, good student, drives her own car, is very responsible, and she grew up in Little Holmby. She has been baby sitting for years and is great with kids. Her name is Lily and you can call or text her at 310-993-5137

——————————————————————

KITTENS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

Recently one of the cats that roam the neighborhood had 5 little kittens in our lower garden.  We took them to VCA Animal Hospital on Sepulveda. They were given full check ups, they got their first vaccinations and were tested for all kitty diseases and they are as healthy as can be. Since they were born in our neighborhood it would be great if we could keep them here.

Let’s try and keep these babies here. We want them to go to a loving home.

We will make a donation on behalf of the family who adopts to a Rescue Foundation who has been guiding us and will continue to guide us through this process.

For more information, please contact Lisa at LBalelo@aol.com

Holmby News – 4th of July Special Edition

1000 burgers and dogs, 1000 cookies, 4 mega kids obstacle courses and so much more!  It was a large and festive 4th of July celebration! See the pics below—it was a ton of fun.

Esther Magna, Caron Schwartz, Rachelle Guerin, Rochelle Glucksman, Randie Kleinman and Katherine Meyer made a great team this year, and they appreciate their volunteer crew, including Mark Magna, Phil Gabriel, Dennis Rosenblatt, Hedy Magna, Samantha Gabriel and of course, Dana and Sandy. Special thanks to Adam and Victor at the park who allowed us to take it over for the day. Bobby Shriver and Councilman Paul Koretz also spent the morning with us.

THANK YOU SPONSORS:

·      ACS Security has been feeding us for many years. They happily and swiftly fed the entire crowd. Their BBQ dedication was endless and fantastic. To Debbie Allen and her volunteer staff, your burgers, dogs and chili were delicious!

·      UCLA Health was our new Platinum sponsor with a generous contribution that covered most of our expenses. Thank you, UCLA Health for your support of Holmby Westwood. All enjoyed the fans and beach ball giveaways.

·      Ralphs joined this year as a new Gold Sponsor and their generosity was seen through their sponsorship of our event, abundant raffle prizes facilitated by a big team from the Westwood store and also the presence of their iconic Ralphs vehicle in our parade. Thank you Ralphs!

·      City Target in Westwood kept kids smiling with face painting and lemonade. Thank you to Adriana and her friendly Target team.

·      Our local realtors also deserve our appreciation for their sponsorship. Their sponsorship covered all the kids activities, including the DJ.

·      We also appreciate ADT for the water and pizza that kept so many families satiated.

·      The Guerin Family donated Honest Kids juice boxes.

·      Clif Bar donated organic products for sampling.

·      The firemen from Station #71 were outstanding and so gracious to stay at the park while kids admired them and their truck.

·      iPIC Theaters was present in full effect with their photo giveaways for kids

·      LA Dancefit Studio rallied participants of all ages to Zumba away!

SPREAD THE WORD about the good work our association does for the benefit of its residents.  Community building, constant email communication among 800+ residents and advocacy in City Hall are just a few of the activities our Board undertakes.  We must work together for our shared concerns of architectural integrity, greenscape preservation, emergency preparedness and crime watch. Residents pay $75 annually to join HWPOA.  You must pay the dues to be a member; being a resident alone won’t do it.  Email Dana to sign up at hwpoa@aol.com.

Please send your business to our main sponsors,
as they dedicated their time for goodwill and exposure. These sponsors ensure our event takes place with food and activities for all!

3.   PLEASE KEEP THE STREETS CLEAN
A resident recently noticed an increase of litter left on the sidewalk and streets.  Much of the trash is food (or bags/cups from fast-food restaurants).  In addition to being unsightly, this kind of garbage can attract coyotes.  Please make sure that you, your children, and your homeworkers pick up their garbage so that Holmby Westwood stays clean and safe.  Thank you.
