5.  SEEKING MILITARY VETERANS FOR UPCOMING EVENT

From the Office of Congressman Ted Lieu:

Each year around Veterans day, Congressman Lieu brings together 6 to 8 veterans to join him in an event where the veterans tell a story about something they experienced while serving.  We look for a wide range of stories about things they experienced while serving – scary, exciting, inspirational, funny.  This is NOT about what the veteran is doing today unless they tie it into a specific experience that inspired this while they were in the Service.

The veteran tells their stories, and NO questions or discussion follows.  The idea is to acknowledge what he/she experienced and hopefully build a better appreciation for our veterans in the community.

We are looking for veterans or reservists who have had active duty and who live or work or volunteer in the CA 36 or nearby (including West LA VA) and would be willing to tell me their story and be considered for the event.

Any veteran interested can either email me one of his/her stories or I am happy to call the veteran and take notes as they tell me the story.

Many thanks,

Janet Turner
Deputy District Director, CA 36
Office of Congressman Ted W. Lieu

1.  LAPD REPORT – PREVENT FOLLOW-HOME ROBBERIES

Our LAPD Senior Lead Officer James Allen reported that last week, there was a follow-home robbery in Bel Air.

The victim had dinner at a well-known restaurant in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area.  He was wearing flashy jewelry that apparently caught the eye of some thieves. They followed him home to Thurston Circle in Bel Air, where they confronted him,  demanding his valuables. When the victim stalled, they shot him. He is currently in the hospital.

Please stay very aware of your surroundings when you are out, especially in the Beverly Hills/Hollywood area.  Be particularly aware of anyone that might be following you.

Do not wear flashy, obviously expensive, jewelry that could tempt a thief, and do not post photos of yourself with such jewelry on social media.

If you feel someone is following you, do not drive home.  Instead call 911 en route and drive to the LAPD station at 1663 Butler Ave. (one block south of Santa Monica Blvd, a few blocks west of the 405 Fwy). It is also a good idea to alter your routes home and pay attention to vehicles that repeatedly make the same turns as you.

2.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

The Green Team recommends recent  articles and an upcoming webinar to learn more about trees, parkways and LA neighborhoods:

  1. Miller, Charles, “A Plastic Lawn is Way Worse than a Real One,” LA Times, August 5, 2024.  Contrary to what many have come to believer, artificial turf is bad for our ecosystem as well as our health. LA City no longer considers artificial turf a form of drought tolerant landscaping.
  2. Pergament, Danielle, “A tour of LA’s Neighborhoods, Let the Trees be Your Guide”  August 6, 2024, New York Times – LA has one of the most densely populated, diverse urban forests in the world, Familiar neighborhoods showcase different tree species.
  3. Renkl, Margaret, “Why Aren’t we Saving Urban Forests?”  April  22,2024,  New York Times. Saving mature trees is just as important as planting new trees to replace those already lost.
  4. Haggerty, Noah, “ California is home to millions of Urban Trees, What Happens When they Die?”  August 10, 2024, LA Times. LA conservationists are turning dead trees into lumber.
  5. Roach, Margaret, “Yes, Tree Collecting Is a Thing,” August 28, 2024, New York Times.  A new book explores this obsession and how it connects us with our own mortality.

Also, you may want to listen in to a Zoom webinar “Goodbye Grass! Save Water with a Native Landscape”  sponsored by The Thomas Payne Foundation and the LA Metropolitan Water District on October 2 from 6-8 pm.  Learn about rebates for replacing grass with sustainable landscaping.

3.  HIDING YOUR HOUSE PHOTOS ONLINE

With burglaries, break-ins and home invasion robberies on the rise in Southern California, experts say there is yet another tool at homeowners’ disposal to protect property.

See below links for tutorials on how to remove photos of your home on Redfin and Zillow as well as blur out your home on Google Street View as a security measure.

4.  CITY COUNCIL APPROVES MORE FUNDS FOR WEST LAPD

From the Westside Current:

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday approved a motion introduced by Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky to allocate $200,000 toward additional police overtime in Council District 5. The funds, drawn from the CD5 Neighborhood Service Enhancements fund, will be distributed to the LAPD’s Wilshire, West LA, and Pacific divisions to increase patrols and bolster public safety efforts.

“This funding is critical for bolstering public safety across the board, especially in light of the challenges posed by LAPD’s staffing shortages,” said Yaroslavsky. “Whether it’s increasing patrols, ensuring safe streets, or supporting no-camping enforcement efforts near schools and parks, these resources will help us address a wide range of public safety priorities throughout the district.”

1.  LAPD REPORT – CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

The LAPD and the Brentwood Community Council shared a number of safety tips to keep your home safe from burglars.  While no measure is absolutely fool-proof, the more we all do to make it harder to commit a crime in our neighborhood, the sooner criminals will leave.

Harden Your Home:

  • Install an alarm and USE it.  Alarm all windows: burglars will even make ladders out of lawn furniture to gain entry upstairs.  Include motion sensors and glass breakers.
  • Keep your house looking lived in, whether you are home or not.  Lights on, noise from a TV, stereo or radio.  Consider putting lights on timers.
  • Safe or Safes – use it, and have it bolted down.  If a safe is not installed properly, it is not effective. Consult a professional.  Consider multiple safes, potentially one acting as a dummy safe. While a convenient location, burglars are going straight to the master bedroom. Consider installing a safe in a child’s room instead.
  • Windows/Glass doors – consider having safety film installed – this makes glass harder to break.

2.  NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

National Preparedness Month is a national campaign that occurs every September. It aims to educate and empower Americans to respond to natural disasters or potential terrorist attacks.  With the 4.7 earthquake in Malibu earlier this week, it is a good reminder to prepare for potential disasters.

Below you will find links to several documents that could be helpful with emergency preparedness.

3.  DOG OWNER ETIQUETTE

HWPOA has recently received several complaints regarding dogs and dog owners:

Pick Up After Your Dog
Please clean up after your dog – always!  Remember that it is illegal, as well as unsanitary, unsightly and un-neighborly to leave your animal’s feces on the sidewalk or neighbors’ lawns.

Use Your Own Trash Bins
While everyone appreciates that you are picking up dog waste, please dispose of it in your own trash bin.  Please be respectful and do not use your neighbors’ bins.

Keep Dogs on a Leash
For the safety of your neighbors, children and other dogs, please keep your dog on a leash at all times when you are outside of your home.  We have had several past reports of dog attacks in the neighborhood, injuring both people and dogs.  Please follow the law and keep your dog on a leash.

Please be sure to remind everyone in your household that walks your dog about these rules – including your children, housekeepers, dog walkers, etc.  Thank you for your cooperation.

4.  SEEKING HOST FOR YOUNG FAMILIES MEET-UP

HWPOA is looking for one or more residents to spearhead a Halloween Meet-up for young families in the neighborhood.  We already have several volunteers but we still need a family who is willing to offer their home or yard to host a small neighborhood event.

With young students in many different schools, it might be a good way to meet neighbors.  The meet-up could be on a weekend afternoon, possibly with costumes, snacks and activities.

If you are interested in hosting or volunteering, please email Dana at hwpoa@aol.com.  Thanks!

3.  STOP SIGNS – SAFETY REMINDER

It has come to our attention that, for some time, there exists a disregard for stop signs in Holmby Westwood as well as elsewhere in the city. Some drivers appear to think stop signs are simply a suggestion. This has caused some near miss accidents and some near miss personal injury in our neighborhood. There have also been a couple of hit and run reports in nearby communities.

PLEASE MAKE A FULL STOP AT STOP SIGNS IN HOLMBY WESTWOOD, and PLEASE BE WATCHFUL IF YOU ARE WALKING OR DRIVING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Thank you.

4.  HOLMBY WESTWOOD GREEN TEAM UPDATE

A Green Team Success Story
The Green Team is thrilled to report a significant response to our door tag campaign, which introduced the updated parkway tree plan for Holmby Westwood streets and the new Holmby Westwood Green Team website. The positive feedback from several residents is a testament to the impact of our collective efforts. We’re excited to share a success story that not only demonstrates the website’s positive impact but also makes us all proud of what we’ve achieved together.

Recently, a neighborhood resident on one of the streets in Holmby Westwood was thinking about the advantages of having a parkway tree in front of his house.  As he was considering which tree species to plant, a door tag was delivered to his home. Upon receiving the door tag, the resident easily navigated the new Green Team website. He found the recommended tree species for his street in the “Updated Parkway Tree Plan” section, along with the “How to Plant a Tree in 5 Easy Steps” section. He then planted the right tree for his street. Here is the beautiful new white crepe myrtle that he planted.

This success is great for the residents, our neighborhood, and the city. We hope that other residents will also use the various resources available on the Green Team website as they plant new parkway trees and care for our beautiful tree canopy. Go Green!

6.  UCLA NEWS: UPDATED POLICIES REGARDING PROTESTS

Dear Westwood Community,

This summer, UCLA staff and faculty have been assessing UCLA’s policies and processes related to free speech and campus safety, developing new initiatives to promote dialogue and well-being, enhancing efforts to combat discrimination in all its forms, and establishing plans to help Bruins rebuild connections following a challenging spring.

Today, we are sharing UCLA’s updated Interim Time, Place and Manner (TPM) policies. These policies govern certain uses of UCLA property, including supporting our community in hosting events on campus and defining when, where and how Bruins and visitors can exercise their First Amendment rights on campus.

As UCLA heads into the fall quarter with classes resuming on September 26, we plan to share additional communications and updates with you for your awareness.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

1.  LAPD COMMUNITY ALERT & CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

A sophisticated crew of burglars using WiFi jamming equipment is targeting Westside Los Angeles, and police are warning residents to be alert.

From the West LAPD:

In the last several months West Los Angeles, LAPD has reported a wave of burglaries targeting residential single-family homes in the Pacific Palisades, Riviera, Brentwood, Westwood Hills, Bel Air, Bel Air Crest, Beverly Glen, Benedict Canyon, Holmby Hills, Little Holmby-Westwood, Westwood South, Cheviot Hills and Beverlywood areas.

2 to 4 unknown males are a part of an organized burglary crew impacting the West Los Angeles community.  Suspects related to this crew are known to target large homes that appear to be unoccupied at the time of the break-in.

On several occasions’ suspects have been depicted using a ladder, step stool, outdoor furniture or exterior drain pipes attached to the rear of the residence to get up to the master bedroom 2nd story balcony. The suspects then smash or cut out a glass partition of the door and crawl in and remove property. These suspects are particularly ransacking the master bedroom and master bedroom closet for jewelry, watches, high-end purses, safes and US currency.  Often times, suspects leave a lay-off/ getaway vehicle out front with a suspect acting as a lookout in case of law enforcement response. Suspects are known to carry handheld short-range radios for communication with the lay-off vehicle/lookout. Suspects also carry a WIFI Jammer in an attempt to disrupt the WIFI signal of wireless residential security cameras like RING or NEST.

2.  INTERVIEW WITH KATY YAROSLAVSKY

From Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky:

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to sit down with the Westside Current for an in-depth, two-part interview, where we dove into the challenges and opportunities we face in our district and across Los Angeles.

In the first part of the interview, we discussed the unique challenges of governing a district as diverse as ours, which includes a range of neighborhoods from Bel Air and Beverly Crest to Palms and Koreatown. We discussed the critical issue of homelessness, highlighting the work we’re doing to bring more interim housing to our district and the challenges we face due to limited resources. It’s a difficult balance, but we’re committed to addressing these issues head-on.

The second part of the series focused on my approach to policymaking and collaboration across ideological lines. I believe that effective governance requires us to bridge divides and work together, and a lot of my time on the City Council has been focused on finding solutions to issues with a range of perspectives. We also discussed public transportation safety and my long-term vision for a sustainable, livable Los Angeles—one where we can reduce traffic, increase mobility, and create safe, vibrant communities.

I encourage you to read both parts, and hope that you will find them insightful into the ongoing work we are doing in Council District 5.

All my best,
Katy

3.  UPDATED COVID VACCINE APPROVED

Federal regulators have approved updated COVID-19 vaccines to better target recent virus strains that have contributed to a summer illness surge in California and around the country.

The approval for this year’s vaccine came a little earlier than in previous years, as most of the country is experiencing increased viral activity.

Supplies of 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are starting to arrive in California and will be increasingly available throughout the state over the next month.

CVS is now offering appointments for the 2024-2025 vaccine, and Walgreens has appointments available beginning Sept. 6.

2.  SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY AT THE POST OFFICE

From Brentwood Homeowners Association:

Last week a member wrote to us that four to five tall young men, wearing fake beards and sunglasses, were harassing everyone entering the post office. In addition to yelling at patrons of the post office, the men were filming people as well as their cars/license plates.

LAPD advised us that unfortunately, this incident is part of a group that calls itself  “First Amendment Auditors.”  They show up at post offices, police station lobbies, sidewalks as well as private businesses and harass people so they can film their reaction, post it online and increase their views.  In addition, they try and bait people to get angry and attack them so they can call the police and do a private person’s arrest for battery.  Sometimes they try and sue.

The best thing to do is just ignore them and go about your business. If they get a reaction in a certain location they will definitely come back.

3.  UPDATE ON CALIFORNIA HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

As you may know, 7 of the top 12 insurance companies have paused or restricted new business in California. Since these 12 companies comprise 85% of the State’s homeowners market, the impact of these decisions is greatly felt by homeowners in Los Angeles.

In response to the State’s insurance crisis, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is taking steps to restore insurance options through his Sustainable Insurance Strategy

A new regulation is being proposed as part of this strategy.  Read more on how you can provide public comment on this regulation and attend the hearing on September 17.

1.  BROXTON PLAZA – COMING SOON TO WESTWOOD VILLAGE

From the Westwood Village Improvement Association (WVIA):

By September 2024, Broxton Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic, creating a pedestrian-friendly plaza to enhance the vibrancy and accessibility of Westwood Village. The Broxton Plaza is a temporary two-year pilot program, and if successful will become permanent.

The Broxton Plaza will feature a patterned street treatment, large planters, tables, chairs, games, and weekly activations. Located on lower Broxton Avenue between Weyburn and Kinross Avenues, it will repurpose the street space into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly area for events, outdoor dining, and activities.

Parking meters will no longer be available on the street, but the Broxton Public Structure offers 2 hours of free parking and a flat rate after 5 p.m. The construction will not affect the parking lot. The closure of Broxton Plaza has the same footprint as the Westwood Village Farmers Market; the parking structure will remain open!

More info at https://thewestwoodvillage.com/broxton-plaza/

2.  DMV NEWS – REAL ID DEADLINE

The DMV reminds Californians there is less than one year remaining before the U.S. Department of Homeland Security begins enforcing the REAL ID requirement. To apply for a REAL ID, Californians should visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov, fill out the online application and upload their documents. Customers must visit a DMV office and bring their uploaded documents to complete the application. By starting the process online, it should take only about 15 minutes in the office.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE – GRAND ($950.01 & over)
Incident #: 240809946

BURGLARY PREVENTION SAFETY TIPS
A majority of the recent organized burglaries utilize a similar method. The burglars use sports utility vehicles or crossover style vehicles, usually with no front plate and a “cold plate” affixed to the rear of the vehicles. Very often you see uninvolved motorists drive right past them during the commission of their crimes.

More and more we are seeing burglars utilizing Wifi Jammers, cutting the power to homes, ripping alarm systems out of the wall, and reaching up to push cameras out of view. A way to combat this is to hard wire all camera systems, pad lock electrical boxes, and placing security cameras in out of reach and clandestine places throughout their homes.

Many of these “dinner time burglaries”, burglaries that occur between 1800 – 2200 hours (6:00 PM – 10:00 PM), occur immediately after victims leave their homes. Anytime you leave your home, have situational awareness and pay attention to vehicles missing front plates, or no plates, that are idly parked in your neighborhoods.

If you have an alarm system and security camera system, make sure it is on and in good working order. Most importantly, know how to use it. Make sure the master bedroom is alarmed with motion detection, glass break notification, and if the master bedroom is on the second story, that the balcony doors are alarmed.  Most burglars enter residences this way because balconies usually are not alarmed. If you bolt a safe into your master bedroom hardwood floor, burglars will pry or cut it out of the floor. It is best to bolt it into something sturdy like concrete.

If any evidence is left behind, do not handle it with bare hands, and immediately notify the responding officers who can collect it.

Finally, look out for each other in your neighborhoods. You live in your neighborhoods and you know them best. Our biggest breaks come from neighbors paying attention and providing information to officers who are responding. The only way we will be successful in stopping them is by utilizing the help of the entire communities where they are occurring.

4.  EARTHQUAKE ALERTS – MYSHAKE APP

Did you feel the 5.2 earthquake last Tuesday evening?  Did you receive an advanced alert?

The MyShake App sent a warning to mobile phone users about 5-10 seconds before the shaking occurred.  Users received an “Amber Alert” type of noise on their phones, followed by a visual warning and an announcement that said, “Earthquake! Drop, Cover, Hold On!  Shaking Expected”.

MyShake sends notices for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.  In addition, MyShake offers information regarding earthquake preparedness, survival and recovery.

NOTE: ShakeAlertLA was previously used by the City of LA for earthquake alerts.  However, ShakeAlertLA no longer sends earthquake alerts to users. Residents who want to receive earthquake early warning notifications should download the MyShake app.
