3.  U.S. OPEN – PARKING & TRANSPORTATION INFO.

As you may know, the United States Golf Association (USGA) will be hosting the U.S. Open Golf Championship in a few weeks (June 12-18) at The Los Angeles Country Club.  This event will bring thousands of visitors to our area the same weekend as UCLA graduation.

The USGA, in conjunction with the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, has unveiled a comprehensive parking and transportation plan for the week of the championship.  Please click the link below for the complete notice.

U.S. Open Parking & Transportation Info.

Road Detours and Traffic
24-hour road detours will take place in the immediate vicinity of The Los Angles Country Club beginning Sunday, June 11 at 5 a.m. and lasting through Monday, June 19.  From Monday, June 12 through Sunday, June 18, local residents and through traffic are encouraged to adjust travel around peak U.S. Open arrival and departure times (7-11 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.) in the vicinity of The Los Angeles Country Club. Shuttle and vehicular traffic is expected to be heavy along the primary routes in and around The Los Angeles Country Club during these times.

Street Access for Residents:
In addition to the notice above, the USGA has informed us that due to the U.S. Open traffic plan, the only access point for residents along Birchwood, Devon, and Strathmore will be from Beverly Glen Blvd or Devon Avenue. Unfortunately, they will not be able to access their homes via Comstock Avenue from June 11 -18.  Residents that live on Comstock Avenue between Wilshire Blvd. and Beverly Glen will be given hangtags by the USGA to access their residence with no issue. This will be the same procedure for residents along Club View Drive between Comstock Avenue and Beverly Glen Blvd.

Should a resident feel the need to contact someone, we have the 2023 U.S. Open email address that is monitored throughout the day by a team of individuals.

Email USGA:
2023usopen@usga.org

Tuesday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m.
at the Hammer Museum

Hammer Forum – Two separate and critical crises—mental health and homelessness—often reveal their urgency most when they intersect. How does L.A.’s housing shortage exacerbate challenges for those with severe mental illness? How does a lack of access to mental health treatment lead to increased homeless populations?

Anna Scott, journalist and creator of the KCRW podcasts Samaritans and City of Tents, speaks with Jon Sherin, former director of the L.A. County Department of Mental Health, Pete White, executive director of the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LA CAN), and Dora Leong Gallo, president of A Community of Friends, about the obstacles faced by these communities and the policies that could help.

3.  NEW BOOK BY ZEV YAROSLAVSKY

A memoir from Holmby Westwood’s former City Councilman and County Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky who served our community for almost 40 years, is now available on Amazon.  As Mayor Bass stated, it is “a compelling history of our city’s last half century…”.  Westwood residents will learn some things about the history of their neighborhood that they may not have known.

Dear Friends:

When I left office 8 ½ years ago, the one thing I promised was that I would write my memoir.  I’ve been writing and re-writing it for the last seven years, and  I’m excited to let you know that it’s done.  Moreover, I’m as  satisfied as I can be that it’s worthy of release.  The book, Zev’s Los Angeles: From Boyle Heights to the Halls of Power, charts the journey of a young social activist who battled to free Soviet Jews before going into politics and landing in the eye of the storm that was city and county government throughout my career.

This is not just a memoir, but as Mayor Karen Bass put it, “a compelling history of our city’s last half century, as conveyed through the life of one of our most impactful leaders.” The book will be released on Tuesday and can be pre-ordered now.  If you are so inclined, please click on the link below and order it. You have known me for many years, and I’m confident you’ll enjoy it and learn things about me you didn’t know.  Thank you!

Jazz Reggae Festival 2023
Monday, May 29 from 11 am to 7 pm
at the UCLA Sunset Recreation Center

In honor of the festival’s 36th anniversary, JazzReggae Fest is celebrating three decades of good vibes, jammin’ music, and cultural enrichment with a one-day festival under the Los Angeles sun.  From the festival’s humble beginnings in 1986, it has continued to grow and develop while forging connections between UCLA and the broader Los Angeles community. Jazz Reggae Fest is growing from its roots, presenting headliners from the genres of jazz and reggae as well as the styles of music that they inspire. Our professional acts will be accompanied by a curated selection of talented student bands.

In addition to the early festival elements of jazz, reggae, and a grassy venue, we aim to preserve sustainable initiatives, live art, and food and craft vendor features that have enriched the festival in recent years. By showcasing these underrepresented genres, JRF strives to create a cohesive and welcoming space for students and the greater LA community. In doing so, the festival opens our campus and connects various communities as they share their love for powerful, conscious, moving music. Each year, we aim to create a dynamic and welcoming space of self-expression, healing, and cultural exchange.

2.  TREE TRIMMING CAUTION – BIRD NESTS

It’s Bird Nesting Season!  Please take precautions when considering trimming trees, hedges and other locations where birds might nest.

In Southern California, bird nesting season usually occurs in spring and can extend through the month of August.  Since birds did not evolve in a situation where nests are relocated, they are unable to recognize a nest as theirs if it is moved.

Unless a tree is presenting a safety issue, the best practice is to hold off on pruning and schedule tree maintenance. As birds do not just nest in trees, the same schedule should be applied to trimming large bushes and shrubs.

3.  PREVENT CREDIT & DEBIT CARD SKIMMING

Thanks to our neighbors in WHPOA for the following information:

In 2022 over $19 million of card benefits were stolen in Los Angeles County due to card skimming. A skimmer is a device that thieves place on ATMs or payment machines to steal information. Gas station machines are particularly vulnerable to theft.

The LA County Consumer & Business Affairs website has valuable information about how to identify a skimmer on a payment machine, protect your cards and what to do if your card is skimmed.  It is found online at https://dcba.lacounty.gov/newsroom/understanding-card-skimmers-and-how-to-protect-yourself/

The map can be accessed at ladwp.com/PriorityRepairs and is updated daily to show the locations of poles remaining to be repaired. It can be accessed from the ladwp.com homepage as well.

Crews are currently working as quickly as possible and are committed to the completion of its “Priority 1” repairs by May 16, 2023.

5.  FREE PIANO CONCERT AT WESTWOOD LIBRARY

Join us THIS SATURDAY, May 13, at 3:30 p.m. for the next concert in our free, informal, monthly concert series at Westwood Library called “SECOND SATURDAYS.”  The duo of LEVY & LIM features violinist Phillip Levy and pianist Tae Yeon Lim with a program of popular, lighter classics for violin and piano, including works by Beethoven, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky and Kreisler.

The new Second Saturdays series is in addition to our signature Sunday concerts at the library. Unlike the Sunday concerts, which take over the entire library while it’s closed, the Second Saturday concerts are much more informal — they take place upstairs in the alcove by the balcony while the library is open for regular business. Starting at 3:30 p.m., concerts last approximately an hour and a half. Free parking in the library garage.

This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to live classical music and musicians in the casual, safe, familiar setting of our local library.

2.  LAPD REPORT – NEW TYPE OF BURGLARY

Thanks to Bel-Air Association for this information.

According a contact at the LAPD, suspects are now using a device called a “Jammer.” This device is approximately the size of an old large cell phone with multiple antennas. It blocks reception between cell towers and mobile phones, and can even interfere with WiFi.

The Jammer was originally created for military and law enforcement use to combat threats like cell phone-triggered explosives and hostage situations.  When used for home burglaries, the Jammer works by preventing your wireless alarm or camera system from transmitting.

Be on the lookout for a group of men carrying backpacks. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the LAPD.

3.  EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TOWN HALL

From State Senator Ben Allen:

Dear Friend,
I’m reaching out to invite you to an important town hall about emergency preparedness in our region.

This winter’s barrage of powerful storms served as a stark reminder that natural disasters are not a question of “if” in California, but rather a question of “when.” Compounding our state’s ever-present threat of earthquakes, the climate crisis has increased the frequency and severity of wildfires, floods, and mudslides. Given these dangers, we have a responsibility to prepare ourselves, our loved ones, and our homes.

That’s why I’ll be hosting a virtual town hall on Wednesday, May 3, at 4:00 p.m. in partnership with California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. We’ll discuss topics such as evacuation readiness, property insurance, and home hardening and retrofitting with experts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, and California Earthquake Authority.

You can register to attend the webinar and submit questions for the experts HERE.

Ben Allen
Senator, 24th District

2.  WESTWOOD PARK SURVEY – POSSIBLE GARDEN AREA

Westwood Park Wants Your Feedback!

The Westwood Park Advisory Board (PAB) is considering the addition of a natural garden in the northeast corner of Westwood Park, located south of the Federal Building and abutting Veteran Avenue. The PAB has created a survey to:

  1. evaluate the need for a garden,
  2. the interest in this potential project from all park stakeholders, the community and potential neighborhood visitors of the park; and
  3. to gather early input on some of the features of the garden.

The purpose of the garden would be to beautify the park and provide some opportunities for community engagement. Important considerations for the garden would include low maintenance, drought-tolerant landscaping, a selection of native California plants, ADA pathways, educational programming, and the opportunity for volunteers to help maintain the garden.

PLEASE HELP US by completing the survey at the following link below by April 21, 2023:

Westwood Park Garden Survey

 Thank you,
The Garden Task Force

4.  METEOR SHOWERS – WHEN TO WATCH

From the Westwood-Century City Patch:

Watch For Fireballs in the Sky this Month:
The Lyrid meteor shower runs from April 15-29, peaking overnight April 22-23, when the moon will be about 9 percent full, according to the American Meteor Society.

It’s an average sky show, producing about 15 or 20 shooting stars an hour, but it historically has produced bright Lyrid fireballs that blaze across the sky and leave dust trails that last for several seconds, according to NASA.

4.  WARNER AVE. SCHOOL EVENT – STREET CLOSURES

Warner Avenue will be having their annual Warner Walk on April 28, 2023.  This is our student-led “jog-a-thon” fundraising event where students reach out to their communities to help raise money for our school.

There will be street closures for this event. The streets that will be affected are Loring, Warner, Holmby, and Woodruff.  Each block surrounding the school will be closed from 8:00 am- 4:00 pm.  Only residents that live on the block will be allowed to drive in-and-out until 10:30 am at which point streets will be closed until the event is over for the safety of the children.

We suggest using alternate routes for the day and parking away from the school.  Parents will be coming to the event which will make parking congested between 12-3. We appreciate all the continued support from our neighbors!

Little Holmby Walking Tour
April 23 and April 30 (Sundays)

SOLD OUT – JOIN THE WAITLIST
Contact the LA Conservancy:
Phone (213) 623-2489 or Email info@laconservancy.org

Join the L.A. Conservancy for a guided walking tour through the historic neighborhood of Westwood-Holmby, or “Little Holmby.”

Holmby-Westwood is one of the City’s premier historic neighborhoods. An early residential suburb, it is well known for its period revival architectural styles and homes dating from the 1920s through the 1950s. It is extraordinary for its collection of residential architecture and early Los Angeles history.

On this guided tour, you’ll see stunning exteriors designed by master architects, learn about Holmby-Westwood’s relationship to nearby Westwood Village and UCLA, and discover what’s happening today in this bucolic neighborhood.

This program was part of our All Roads Lead to Westwood fall tour. We’re thrilled to be able to bring it back for a limited engagement for folks who missed it the first time around.

This tour is provided in partnership with the Holmby-Westwood Property Owners Association.

6.  FREE PIANO CONCERT AT WESTWOOD LIBRARY

Join us on Saturday, April 8, at 3:30 p.m. for next concert in the new free, informal, monthly concert series at Westwood Library called “SECOND SATURDAYS.” Next Saturday’s concert features pianist David Yang, from the graduate performance program at the USC Thornton School of Music. Mr. Yang brings us two beautiful solo piano pieces: Mozart’s elegant Sonata in F Major, KV 332, and Chopin’s monumental Sonata in B Minor, Op. 58 — both lovely sonatas that you are sure to enjoy.

The new Second Saturdays series is in addition to the Westwood Library signature Sunday concerts. (Note that in the months when we have a Sunday concert, there will be no Second Saturday concert.) Unlike the Sunday concerts, which take over the entire library while it’s closed, the Second Saturday concerts are much more informal — they take place upstairs in the alcove by the balcony while the library is open for regular business. Starting at 3:30 p.m., concerts last approximately an hour. Free parking in the library garage.

This is a great opportunity to introduce your kids to live classical music and musicians in the casual, safe, familiar setting of our local library.

7.  ACTIVITIES & THINGS TO DO

SKIRBALL PUPPET FESTIVAL
Sunday, April 16, 10:00 am–4:00 pm

Wonder and merriment await at the Skirball Puppet Festival. During this fan-favorite event, puppets of all shapes and sizes will be walking, soaring, and stomping about ready to meet you! So, say hello, shake a leg, and share high fives as you move between performances from some of Southern California’s premier puppetry acts.

Adding to the magic are two wildly fun puppet parties, where festivalgoers and puppeteers all meet up to enjoy live music together. While you’re here, design a puppet with imagination-sparking materials so your newly created pal can join the fun, too!

Advance reservations are now sold out.  Walk-ups welcome.  We will post an alert on skirball.org when walk-up tickets sell out. Check here on the day of the festival.

3.  BROKEN CURB REPAIRS

Thank you to Brentwood Homeowners Association for the following information:

Who Is  Responsible for A Broken Curb?
A member recently wrote us after their Service Request to LA’s Street Services to repair their curb was denied.  The reason? “Per Municipal Code, Chapter VI, Section 62.104 adjacent property owners are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the public right of way from Curb face to property line.”  A check of the municipal code section cited confirms this:

“SEC. 62.104. REPAIRS TO SIDEWALKS, DRIVEWAY APPROACHES, CURB RETURNS AND CURBS….
(b)   Responsibility for Maintenance. The owner of a Lot shall maintain any Sidewalk, Driveway Approach, Curb Return or Curb on or fronting on the Lot in such condition that the Sidewalk, Driveway Approach, Curb Return or Curb will not endanger any Person or property passing thereon or violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.”

In general, for city services (e.g., reporting downed trees, streetlight outages, potholes, scheduling bulky-item pickups, etc.) you can use MyLA311, or by calling 311. Be sure to get a Service Request Number so you can follow up if the matter is not addressed in a reasonable amount of time.

5.  UCLA EUCALYPTUS TREES

Some neighbors may have noticed many trees missing on the UCLA campus on Sunset, west of the Westwood Plaza entrance. Nurit Katz, Chief Sustainability Officer for UCLA, addressed the issue at a recent meeting with community leaders. Ninety-six Eucalyptus trees along Sunset have been identified as having a fungus that necessitates their removal. Thirty have already been removed, four have fallen, and sixty-two are slated to be removed soon. Not all trees along Sunset are Eucalyptus and those that have been removed will eventually be replaced by a different species.

At present, UCLA is doing a risk assessment of trees on and off campus of its 20,000 trees. For additional information, please visit https://www.sustain.ucla.edu/landscape-and-biodiversity/
